Help, before I destroy this grill....How does the grill surround come off the fender?

Is it held in place with snap in clips to the fender, or are the clips bolted to the fender?

If they are bolted, how in the hell do you get to those bolts? The inner fender covers that area up. No access.

I looked in the shop manual, but doesn't show.

Anyone have a body diagram of this area. I also did a search on here without any luck.

Tiny nuts on "Z" shaped sheet metal brackets that require a really long extension, between the fender top and the headlight bucket, accessible only from the wheel well. There's about an inch of vertical clearance (if that) and about a 8-10 inch depth!

Wait 'till you have to put them back on!!

Oh joy!!! Just when I finished doing front brake lines, this has to happen.....Have to remove just for a tiny dent on the lower part of the grill.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

cut mine off with a grinder and reinstalled with a tiny bolt.made life a whole lot easyer.

yep mine are missing.

Easy to get frustrated, and start twisting and pulling.

I got lucky the first time and it came out easy, but the second time (and lots I have seen) ripped the aluminum surround.

Those surrounds take A LOT of hits.

How did you get to the back side with a grinder, if it is that tight of an area?

I haven't looked at what I'm facing yet. Just getting ideas......

All original except the tires/wheels and with 65xxx miles. Was always garaged.....
So far, all the nust and bolts have been coming off with ease. I hope these grill nuts will also.

just remove all the other fasteners and lift the surround up and out.that will reveal the top side of the stap.i cut the mounting stud, back side where it passes through the strap, with a dremel and a small cut off wheel.then found a small bolt that fit the hole and reassebled in the same manner.

Thanks....I'll give that a try....

I'm so jealous of you 66-67 guys with undented outer grille chrome. I've been driving around with my mushed passenger leading edge for way too long.
