Spiders in my shop

Never heard of a hedge apple so I looked it up and wouldn't you know....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maclura_pomifera

"The fruit was once used to repel spiders by placing one under the bed. Various studies have found elemol, an extract of Osage orange, to repel several species of mosquitos, cockroaches, crickets, and ticks.[13] One study found elemol to be as effective a mosquito repellant as DEET.[14] A patent was awarded in 2012 for an insect repelling device using Osage orange.[15]"

Now to figure out where to get them!

Meep
We have them think on the east coast. I'll ship you some this fall if you want.

Wow, that would be cool to try out. Let me know. I normally don't mind spiders but they can reach overload status quickly.

Hmmmm, I wonder if those hedge apple things will keep liberals away??

Boy wouldn't that be great, I'd plant them everywhere. Thanks for the info, I knew it worked but never knew why.

Wow, I just looked up hedge apple and saw a pic, my neighbor across the street has a tree in her front yard and it gets hundreds of them every year.
She's a good friend of ours and I'm sure she'l give me as many as I want, I'm defiantly going to try them for spider control.
Thanks guys.

Ortho home defence max worked for me

I hate freaken' spiders, when I got my current 68 RR back in 2005, it was full of them damn Black Widows inside the frame, under the car, I was real cautious when working under the car or walking in the garage especially barefoot, they stand there on their back legs arched up & defy you to do something...LOL... I had to clear out webs all the time under the car, I tried everything, no pesticide seemed to work, the bottom of my shoe seemed to work best, I did spray with brake clean or carb cleaner a few times.... I've never heard of the Osage-Orange Horse-apple was good for keeping spiders at bay, what do you do with them, to keep the spiders away ???... Thankfully, I finally got rid of them, nasty freaken critters, not too many things give me the eeby geebies like Black Widow spiders do...

if you've ever been laying on the ground under a car & have a Black widow spider drop down on you, you will never move so damn fast in your life, it's a wake up call for damn sure, it gives me the eeby jeebies, just thinking about all the times it happened to me...

from Yahoo today:

Spiders are not fond of citrus. In a spray bottle, mix water and unsweetened lemon or lime juice. Wipe your countertops with the mixture or spray down doorways and windowsills. You can deter spiders in your garden by spreading around lemon, orange, or lime peels.

I remember now that my Dad and I mixed citric acid and water for wood bees and the spiders left as well.

Great tip! I don't have many pests around where I live except raccoons and spiders. I scare the hell outta the 'coons with a Red Ryder, but I've been at a loss for the arachnids. They weave webs inside my Charger side mirrors! I'll try the citrus spray!

Dammit boys, I'm loaded with brown recluse spiders. After researching them they say they can leave a year without water.
