Still continuing process of figuring wiring and need help w/ this harness. I have a yellow and brown wiring that runs from plug on tranny, follows the driverside firewall and fender and sits in front where headlight is. Where is this wire suppose to plug into or go? The other 2 are plugged into firewall connector.

Plug the connector in and the car still allowed me to start in all gears. Car is an A/T. Thanks Nick

Whoa, to the headlights!? Lol, that's a new one. Whoever did that was pretty industrious, they had to extend the harness by about 4 or 5 feet. Not sure what year/model you're talking about, but the neutral safety switch should have 2 or 3 prongs. If it has 3 prongs, outer 2 are the reverse light circuit. when the trans is in reverse, they make a complete circuit and plug into the bulkhead and allow the reverse lights to light up. The center prong is the neutral safety prong. It plugs into the starter relay and when in neutral or park, it gives the starter relay ground, which completes the ignition start circuit when the key is in the start position, and allows the starter relay to make contact thus allowing the starter motor to receive power.

I had to make my own nss harness (mine didnt come with one) so i have no idea what color each lead is (mine are all black).

Yeah; wiring is a mess. Where on relay does the wire plug into? Do u have a pic of relay w/ mounted? 71 charger btw Also, does it matter which way u plug the connector onto switch on tranmission?
Thanks Nick

Here's a pic. The 4 connections are from left to right: battery+, starter, top right is NSS center pin, bottom right is yellow from ignition switch (starter circuit). Doesnt matter which way you hook up the NSS plug at the tranny, as the outer 2 pins are the same and just make contact with each other or dont.

Yeah, mine's an auto but it originally came with a 4 speed starter relay (i guess thats what it was) that had the NSS prong soldered to the case for permanent ground and had no NSS harness at all. Thankfully it had a very loose converter, because with the shifter all botched up I accidentally started it in drive once or twice.:head_smack:

See the black connector at the top of this pic with the purple and black wire, that is the backup light wiring and connector. The brown wire connected to the starter relay is the neutral safety wire. How it's actually supposed to route in the car I'm not sure. I've routed it differently than what's in this pic but I thought this would give you an idea of where it connects.

So does it have to plug onto both switches on right side of terminal? Does it have to be grounded also? (Have a single wire with a connector on end and not sure which one it hooks 2) Does anyone have a pic of their relay with this plugged onto it? Thanks Nick

Looking at the pic above, it goes to the top right terminal. The other two (outer pins) should plug into the bulkhead.

So i plugged it to top right terminal and started car; worked. Then i put car in neutral w/ foot on brake and started car; car still started.
Does this mean that the relay itself is no good? Neutral safety plug on tranny is brand new and wiring is now brand new. What does connector that plugs onto terminal look like; Any pictures from under someones hood of this connection please? Thanks Nick

That's how it should work. It prevents the car from starting in gear and allows starting in p and n. test it in drive lol

I knew that. Perfecto!! Need to stop these late night work sessions on car. Thanks.
Next I gotta figure out the entire horn setup

Lol no worries, post some details and some pix of what u have regarding horn and we can walk you right through it. Not sure if your year has 2 horns or 1, but the horns are activated through the horn relay.
