Does Anyone Make Front Kickpanels with Speaker Mounts that fit a 70 B Body?

I'll have to take the kick panel off and measure the depth behind again. There wasn't enough room for even a decent 3 1/2 to fit between the metal and the pedal.

It's a photo from the web and not my car. I don't have a photo of the driver's side.

This has been discussed before here: http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/showthread.php?45081-kick-pannels-with-speakers&highlight=kick+panel

Check out the door panel speakers on Kenny Wayne Shepherd's the Extreme Lee: http://kennywayneshepherd.net/media1/pics/the-cars/1969-xtreme-lee

On kws' extreme lee it looks like they're in the lower front door area where I was talking about putting them, and maybe a tweeter in the upper door pad.

I used an old set of kick panels and fiberglassed over them similar to the black one posted. I could have left the parking brake but decided on some massive 6.5" that needed like 5" of depth so i converted to a handbrake that is now beside my seat.

That's great to know that the kick panels are a nice option and can fit quality speakers, guys. Great to know.

Thanks themechanic, forgot all about that thread. The kenwood's will fit in the kick panels and will clear the parking brake pedal. The only trick it cutting the hole in the right spot of the kick panel so the speakers magnet sits in the recessed area of the jam pillar. Not that hard to do. Like KIWI mentioned, a center dash dual 3.5" speaker set up mounted to the custom braket from '74 Dart will clear a radio, but the heater control cables are a tight squeeze. One thing to mention there is if you have a standard 68-70 dash with a factory tach, the magnet's in the center speakers will pull on the dial for the tach. I had to install a piece 3" x 3" of low magnetic permeability material on the left side of the magnets so the wouldn't mess with the tach.

Right now i'm running two polk 3.5"s in the center, two Kenwood 4" Excelon in the kick panels, two Polk 6" x 9"s in the back tray, a 12" Kenwood Excelon Sub-woofer in a non vented box in the trunk, a Kenwood 1200 Watt 5 channel amp, and a Kenwood Excelon deck with bluetooth, pandora, hands free calling, usb and Ipod hook up. The car is completely lined in rattletrap sound deadening/acoustics and sounds phenomenal inside. Perfect for blasting "Black Betty" or "Mississippi Queen" while laying waste to all the funny winged tupperware contraptions with their press on chrome rims and chainsaw mufflers.

Good luck!

You have one hell of a way with words Will hahaha

I'll try digging through your thread later but would you happen to have pics of your kick panels handy? I get what you mean about the speakers fitting into the recess in the body but did you use any kind of backing or structure on the outside of the kick panel, or just cut a hole and mount em right to the plastic? Sounds like an excellent way to go!

Hehehehe...thanks man! Below are a couple pics for you. If I remember correctly, the speakers come with a mounting template for cutting your hole/screw holes, and they mount with 4 small screws into an outer retaining ring. Like mentioned, it's pretty easy to do. No real need for reinforcement or extra backing, they hold just fine without being loose or sloppy.

Cool deal thanks for the pics! I was planning on just running 6 1/2's in the doors and 6x9's in the package tray, but seeing how this worked for you now I'm considering doing the kick panels like you and running the dual 3 1/2's (I think that's what they are?) in the outer dash positions since my car was originally a 3 speaker dash:

That way I should get decent stereo separation and a nice full sound with 4 speakers up front and the 6x9's in back. And since I'll be using a 4 channel amp I can just run splitters and have the kick panels slave off the dash speakers' signals. :thinker: What say you brotha? Think it'd be a halfway righteous setup?

Is that large blue cable the power feed for the Amp? If so, I routed mine through the same way and to the starter relay via the speedometer cable grommet. That keeps it almost out of sight. I just felt it looked ugly going to the battery.

Concur with speedy Prop .. I miss your regular posts. Please get another car for the mrs and get to work :)

You bet! 3.5's" I'm thinking that's gonna sound excellent! With you having better separation (3 speaker set up) I'm sure it's going to top what i'm running, sound quality/acoustics wise. A man's gotta have good tunes!

Sure is Kiwi. Ran mine through the oval body plug on the firewall, wrapped it in electrical tap and ran it bundled with the forward harness so it blended in. I tied it to a 150AMP circuit breaker. The cheesy giant plastic fuse that came with the amp install kit looked like a long lost movie prop from James T. Kirk's days on the Enterprise.

Hey thanks Tallhair.....Got so many things cooking, i'm like a fat kid in a pastry shop......no clue where to start! Trying to dial in the acreage up north for survey, land clearing, building plans, permits..ect..ect... Snowmobiles keep me pretty tied up this time of year as well. I have a ride for the wife still on the radar as well. Think I need a stunt double or something. LOL

Cool deal I'm already on the hunt for speakers! So glad I found this thread and a better way to set up my system, thanks man :icon_thumleft:

Ya know I can ways step in as your stunt double, just throw me the keys to skeletor and we'll be set lol!

And when does the identity of this new mystery project get revealed?! I think I speak for everyone on here in saying I'm ready to see some more propwash automotive sorcery take place

Hehehehe...Well played! I'm gonna need the keys for your charger first.

As far as a project for the misses, i'm gonna hold off on any kind of unveiling until i'm a bit more sure the car could actually become a reality. I will say it looks just plumb crazy from what i've seen of it.!

Gotta admit, sure am missing arc burned eyes, lungs full of rust, the constellation's of metal slivers in my hands and hanging out in the ranks of you boys in the resto threads. Soon my friend...soon!

I have wal-mart Pioneer 5 1/4's in the kick panel area of my 73.

6 1/2 would fit as well, but these were $10 at a yard sale.

Right now the panels are off, and they are just held by the magnet, to the door hinge, but I'm designing a plate for them.

Parking brake clearance is fine.

There was a member that used a bath tub drain cover as a template to drill holes in the factory kick panel.

It came out really clean looking, and was way less obvious than a speaker grille on top of the kick panel, not to mention more clearance.

That's what I intend to do, with a spare set of panels.

EDIT- OK, not quite as attractive as I remembered them, but still very low key.

Haha, now THERE's a solution. Black68, care to share the details??
