More than several of my cars did cry for mercy lol. I used to be a car terrorist! Man, it's a wonder I survived! West Beach in Galveston hated me but I never lost any in the surf!

I turned 16 in the summer 1979 I got my first car that summer a one owner ram air 72 GTO with a 455 4 speed for $1800. My dad wouldn't let me buy a worn out 70 hemi cuda with a pistol grip for $2500 but that's another story. The second day of school a kid walks up to me and asked me if I thought my GTO was fast and of course I said yeah man. Later that day a kid that was a senior challenged me to a race after school. He took me outside to show me his car and it was a silver 68 RT charger with a 440 auto on the column. The charger was original with 323 gears. So after school about 20 cars follow us out to this two lane country road. He wanted to leave from dead stop but I knew the dodge would kill me off the line so I got him to agree to a 10 roll. We agree to leave on the third horn blow. I can still remember seeing the dodge lift up and pull me a car link right from the start and I still remember seeing the cool round taillights on the charger. He beat me a couple of car links. Both cars were 100% stock. The fact that my car had a lower gear is what helped me I'm sure. Thinking back on it now it's amazing we didn't get into a crash and I'm sure neither one of us was wearing a seat belt but we feared nothing at that age. That was the start of many street races I got into in high school but I still remember that sunny day very well. The kid with the charger sold it after high school and I still have the GTO. We have been friends ever since that day and every time we see each other that race is mentioned. I think I enjoyed life much more back than, working as a bag boy at a grocery store making $3.10 per hour saving up enough money to buy a set of headers so my car would be a little more faster. Before worrying about my 401-k plan or what new piece furniture my wife wants to buy. But at least I can walk down to my basement and relive the good old days. I just wish I had had the money to buy the 68 charger which he sold for a $1000 in 1980.

The fastest stock musclecar I ever raced was a 69 ss nova 396 375 HP. The big block novas was fast.

Looking at the two lane black top 55 chevy picture I never noticed the antenna on the cowl before which makes sense with a tilt front end.

Nice story ......But I need to Know......So tell the story of the hemi cuda that got away:headbang:

An idiot once showed up with a 69' gto to a friends party in Phoenix bragging he could take any mopar, any time. my friend had a 64 valiant with the 340,weighed 1800 gross. He was at the time a sponsored Chrysler team. (1974). We rolled out the valiant, and started it up. this was a 10.90 car documented. They hit the back road, and that Pontiac guy was spewing it out, as the valiant was homely. Eight seconds later, all you could see was a GTO beating feet, and not coming back! so funny.

Nice story ......But I need to Know......So tell the story of the hemi cuda that got away:headbang:

The summer of 79 I spent the day with a good friend and his dad. My friends parents had gotten a divorce which was real rare in those days. His dad had moved to a small town about 30 miles away. On the way back to my house I spotted a orange cuda with a black hood sitting in a yard with a for sale sign. I had saved up about $2000 dollars from hauling hay and mowing grass. I asked my friends dad to turn around to look at my potential first car. The car was orange with a black vinyl top. I looked in the window and saw the cool looking pistol grip shifter and I knew it was a straight shift which was a requirement. This kind of rough looking guy comes out and I told him I was interested in his car. He opens the door and I could see the car looked well lets say it looked tired. The door panels had holes cut out for speakers there were wires hanging down from under the dash the carpet was wore out and I remember the shifter seemed real loose. I'm sure now the car had been run hard and put away wet. I started it up and it sounded terrible. I asked him what was wrong with it and he said it had a header leak. It seems like it had a fiberglass hood I'm not sure now but when I saw the dual four barrels and the big valve covers I was sold. I told the guy I would bring my dad back and that I wanted it. I got home and asked my dad if he could loan me $500 to buy this orange plymouth. At the time I didn't know you could neg a price. Well my dad wanted to see it so we drive back. We get there and my dad just thought it needed to much work and he was convinced the gas mileage would be terrible (remember this is the Jimmy Carter days). All the way home I tried to convince my dad that the hemi with dual carbs wouldn't be that bad on gas but he just said wait and find a better car. Than I found the GTO that a woman had bought new but I never forgot the cuda. Every time we watched Barrett Jackson and saw a high dollar 70 hemi cuda I would mention that car to my dad and he would always say I probably would have killed myself in that car and he may be right. I can't help but wonder if that car is sitting in some car collection today.

I also wanted a 69 or 70 ss 396 4 speed chevelle but it was hard to find one even in 1979 that was in decent shape and was still running. I also looked at several 69 z28's with the 302. I liked how they looked I just never felt that impressed with the small 302 when compared to a big block. Back then you could buy them all day long for $1800. I wanted a 66-67 chevy 2 with a 327 4 speed and they were cheap but I just didn't find the right one. I also wanted a 68-69 Dodge RT but just didn't find the one I wanted. I looked at a few 66-67 GT fairlanes but they seemed to all have a squeaky front end. I guess that is why I like different cars today. I love them all. It was a different world.
