I have a '73 RR with the standard Rally gauges and would like to convert over to the Factory Replacement Tach. that is sold by Classic Industries. Since it is a newer design (?) will it be a drop in to replace the existing gauge or will I have to open up the backer bracing to get it to fit? I will also be switching over to an aftermarket Voltmeter to replace the factory Ammeter/Charging gauge. What do I need to do with the Ammeter wiring? Thanks.....

Bob

Are you installing a voltmeter in the cluster in place of the ammeter? I am actually on here looking for some way to get rid of ammeter myself but replace the voltmeter in original ammeter location. Surely someone on here has converted or knows a way to do this? The ammeter wires are usually hooked together to complete the circuit. I'll be following your thread to see what responses you get.

Which Ralley cluster do you have, with or without a clock? With a clock, it’s a direct replacement of the clock for the tach, some wiring will be necessary. Without a clock, for a factory look better off finding a cluster with a clock, swap it out. Ammeter replacement? Ammeter intact, stick with it, bypass the bulkhead connectors & upsize the charging circuit wiring, Many threads here and elsewhere on that subject.

Check out my resto thread. Post #84. Imbedded in my post is a link to Propwash's original thread which I duplicated. They're not ralley dashes but the concept is the same.

Then check out madelectric.com on how to wire for the ammeter by-pass.

It is a non-clock dash. I will be converting to a non-stock voltmeter and have already modified a spare instrument bezel for the volt meter, just to see what is needed for that conversion. There was a story in Mopar Action not too long ago where E-booger detailed the conversion using the stock ammeter gauge face and a aftermarket voltmeter.

As I usually state. If ammeter is good, you can keep it.

If you want a voltimeter, you can add it

IN ANY CASE for charging upgrade, bulkhead bypass is mandatory... with or without ammeter. And get a nice output alt. Someone able to feed 45 to 55 IDDLING. Once again this is with ammeter or voltimeter or both. The MAIN problem is the alt and bulkhead terminals, NOT REALLY THE AMMETER. Even more if you fit a bigger capacity batt ( an usual mistake )

Tach on a non clock/tach cluster ? is easier get the propper housing with all 4 small meters in place, since all these are diff, including housing ( although a housing can be modified... cast are there for both setups ) You can keep your actual speedo and bezel since will fit the same on any housing

The 2 best options as far as the ammeter issue is either Nacho's (he has a nice write up on dodgecharger.com), or the MAD Electrical bypass which eliminates the ammeter all together.

Nacho, thanks for the EBay tip but the price tag is kinda scary. I am retired and on a "fixed" income so I always have to keep an eye on costs. I already have the aftermarket (Autometer Pro-comps) gauges in stock except for the Tach..

Lol, was a joke... I know it is pricey :icon_winkle:. As mentioned, you can get just the housing and 4 small meters around and you will be set. They are not hard to find around and quite often float on ebay. Not expensive.

Moparmarks could get someone of those around too
