Hey guys so I'm assembling my 440 for my car in the next week or so A project which was put on hold about a year ago. I had all the machine work completed a year ago which included the machine shop getting me a reman forged crank which sat until a week ago. So I was cleaning things up this week getting ready to start assembly and found some pitting on a journal not sure if it was there before or not but either way has me nervous. I Called a local engine builder who told me he could polish it for 20 bucks plus tax which sounds good to me. A buddy of mine says if I get it polished it will taper the journals and throw everything off I've never heard of this being a problem.

polishing the crank will not hurt it if it is done by a good machine shop

Golly I have seen old time machinist polish journals by hand with Emery cloth and get them right. Would definitely stay away from that shop. Have them polished but at a shop with a good reputation.

How did you store the crank hanging, standing, or laying down and was it sprayed with protectant and wrapped

If stored properly it should be ready to go but if in doubt have it checked by a pro

Not emery you will destroy it , but crocus cloth is what you use you can do it yourself without a problem

I dropped it off last night the guy said 20 dollars plus tax to polish it. He also said the pitting was probably already there and would still be there after but with no high spots to damage bearings.

Was it initially ground on the low mid or high for clearance? Polishing wont hurt it either way but id find more out about the crank. Measure it if you have mics

I was actually plastigaging the crank when I noticed the spots on it. The clearances were right where they should be according to the how to rebuild the big block mopar book.

Got the crank back Knicks are still there but definitely know there's no high spots that can damage my new bearings. The guy who polished it said it should be no problem at all and for the 25 dollars he charged me its worth it just for piece of mind.
