OK all. I am going to cut to the chase as I need help ASAP please. I will introduce myself in another post as soon as I post this. I promise.

I am hot on the heels of a 1968 dodge charger. Needs total restore. But here is my question. I tried to decode in and the first digit on the VIN is a W and not an X. I am told the dash number matches the title also. But when I try to decode it I keep seeing that only coronets have the W and all chargers have a X. However I then used a online decoder that came back coronet/charger.

Is this a deal I need to stay away from or could it genuinely have a vin that appears as WH23G8GXXXXXX

thanks for all the help guys and gals.

Check the rad support, fender tag and trunk weatherstrip rail and see if those match the sequence number of the Vin you have.

Sounds like the dash was swapped out of a Coronet?

I am told the fender tag matches the dash and title vin also. Im stumped. Do I buy the car or avoid it like the plague? Its not like there are a lot of these cars out there to be had.

double post, Sorry.

Research on Google:
Mopar Vin Tag Decode....

Seeing that you are "in a rush" you can simply do your own research and "not have to await" an answer from the forum.

PS: Welcome aboard and thanks for joining the forum!

If it is a coronet dash would that stop you from buying the car? Or are you worried about mix and match charger.....? If it needs a total restore what difference does it make....?

if I ever decide to sell it, Someone else is going to do the same thing. Decode it see it has all coronet numbers and do the same thing I am doing. My biggest fear is that it was stole back in the day and someone did some swapping.

I personally would run away as fast as I could but that's me. Sounds like it's a charger titled as a coronet.

Maybe the real VIN #'s are still there
or partials at a min, if it hasn't been completely altered {fraud}
Check the radiator support Partial VIN #'s &
the rear of the car, right side of the under the trunk seal partial VIN #'s &
engine on the pan rail & trans "could have" partial VIN #'s too {if they weren't changed}

I'd check those #'s at a min, see what {who's} car you really have,
that could or will, tell the true tale "Possibly"

If it was just a dash change, no some other hokey pokey crap...

IIRC the VIN is for a Coronet body style, it didn't come from the factory like that...
something's been changed, buyer beware that's just a warning, do your due diligence/research...

I assume it doesn't have any build sheet
{under the rear seat}
or fender tag {on the driver-side fender shelf} ???

It could be something innocent like swapping out the dash with a Coronet dash,
but any knowledgeable Mopar enthusiast,
will be really extremely leary not knowing the real VIN #'s
or if it was registered as a Coronet when it's actually a Charger {???}...

Could be a simple mess up, not swapping out the proper VIN tags, but I highly doubt it...

good luck

I agree. Someone has put a Coronet VIN on a Charger. This is not a factory screw up as the "W", "H" or the "23" would not apply to a '68 Charger.

As this is a '68, the VIN WILL NOT MATCH the fender tag or radiator support so don't even waste your time trying to match them up.

A '68 Charger dash would have the Rallye style round gauges. A WH Coronet would have the 120 MPH horizontal dash. Another telling fact of a swap out.

i had 2 68 coronet R/Ts......... one had a standard dash, one had a ralley dash (round guages)

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the help. This sucks because the price was RIGHT!
