8 3/4 742 case torque on pinion nut?

Changing rear pinion flange yoke on 8 3/4 with 742 case with 1 7/8" pinion all new parts what would be the torque on the pinion nut?
I know it has the pinion shims and not the crush sleeve. Is 40 to 45 Ft. Lbs.
about right?

40 to 45 is no where near enough. More like 250

240 is what the book says but what's another 10 lbs once you get to that point but putting that much torque on one isn't exactly easy unless it's already in the car. I usually end up with less but use I'll use Loctite and never had a problem with one in the 30+ years I've been building these things.

I didnt know off the top of my head on a 742. Dana 60 spec gives a range between 215 and 330 i think. I was baseing my answer off that. 250 works. Hell, bigger danas are like 440 or 450 ft lbs.

Just to clarify 742 case is 1 3/4 step pinion, not tapered (which used the crush sleeve). My 1970 service manual says 240 ft-lbs min for 1 3/4. My 1966 manual (pre-taperd pinion) says 240 ft-lbs AFTER setting pre-load.

That's a lot of torque and like I said earlier, never had any trouble with bearings or anything with less torque on the nut but do use a good size dab of red Loctite on the threads to make sure it never comes loose on it's own. Once my preload is set, I nail it down with a GOOD impact.....

I sure hope you arent going to use that 8 3/4 rear end with the 572" motor in the pictures you posted.....better get a DANA....just a thought.

No the 8 3/4 is for another Mopar I have. I have a Currie set up in the 1968 Charger.
