Hi guys,
I'm in the process of trying to get a razor-sharp tune on my recent 440 build. I've put about 1500 miles on it, and have got the jets about right (using an A/F gauge) and the timing CLOSE to perfect... but not quite there on it's curve. (When I floor it from a cruise speed of about 40 mph, she does kind of accelerate rough, though I can rarely hearing pinging. A/F readout stays within acceptable limits, maybe dropping down from a 14.0 at cruise to 12.3 at WOT).

Anyway, I'm using my old Mopar distributor, which is fine, but you have to weld on it, and take it totally apart, and file, and it's all trail-and-error with a lot of labor involved. I want to switch to an improved design, that is easier to adjust mechanical advance.

Right now I am thinking about this Firecore Distributor that is a direct swap from the old Mopar units. I can re-use my Orange box, and don't have to cut any wiring. Also, the cap has "female" terminals rather than HEI which means I can keep my plug wires.

Here is the one I am thinking about, for $165:

However, I have noticed that Firecore has another 440 dizzy with vacuum advance that is about $80 more, $245: http://www.manciniracing.com/firretorundi.html

Then of course, you have the MSD billet dizzy $400: http://www.manciniracing.com/msd426440enb.html

Does anyone have any experience using the first Firecore dizzy? The one that plugs right in to the existing dizzy pickup and used the original orange box? That's the one I am leaning towards, mainly because I don't want to have to switch my sparkplug wires to work with an HEI cap, and the fact that I own 2 brand new orange boxes (one on the firewall, one as a spare) and don't want them to go to waste. Anyone think I would be better off with the more expensive, billet models that have their own internal "ignition box"?

Thanks!

I use one with a MSD no vac adv. I really like it for the compact size and the advance has infininte adjustment. I have about 12 degrees set in the centrifugal advance and total timing at 33. Still starts warm and get no ping.
Can use fab aluminum valve covers too. MSD distributors are nice but limit your valve cover selection. Hope this helps.

Yeah, valve cover clearance... i love my vintage M/T covers and wouldn't want to lose them!

Also, I DEF want to keep a vacuum advance!
Thanks for the input bud

The Firecore in your first link is a nice unit. I installed one in my 72 Charger after fighting with a MP unit. Easy to set the mechanical advance and is a direct fit replacement. Get yourself a spring kit to go with it. If and when I replace the one in my Road Runner its going to be a Firecore.

I have one and have to say it's the best dam distributor I have ever had. best of both worlds, when I am running my 780cfm vac sec I use the vac advance on the unit for cruising, when running the 850cfm dbl mech. I cap that off and it's locked in on the mech advance.

Cool, i like your double set up!!!! Very cool.
Are you using the first distributor I listed? The one that uses your mopar ECU?
Thanks bro!

Do you know where I can find a spring kit? Thanks bud

Yes the first one. I changed the connector to work with my MSD now Summit box.

FBO sells them for $10. Also take a look at their limiter plate which will allow you to set the mechanical advance without welding on the older style distributors.

I got a firecore with vac adv last year from Mancini because my timing was jumping around with my old mp unit, great unit, rock steady timing and mine came with a spring kit, but no guages to set mechanical limit.

I run one on my 383 with a MSD SS coil. Easiest wiring job I've ever done. Damn does that thing work great. Vacuum advance is still on it.

Hello

How was the Distributor connected?
What happens to the ballast resistor?
How do the 12V start raising?
Is ignition box disabled?
Do you have a wiring diagram for me?
And also pictures?

greeting + thanks

Firecore plug and play here too. No need for another plate to limit mechanical advance. Pull out old MP el;electronic unit and drop in new dist. Firecore has two phillips screws that adjust the advance. Simple, no bushings or plates needed. Oh and they are inexpensive too, been running mine for 3 years now.

My dist came with another set of advance springs, didnt use them.

They plug in the same as a Mopar electronic distributor. Use the same control box, ballast, ect. Plug and play.
