Anyone here got sick and tired of their factory fuel gauge? I don't want to take the instrument panel out again. Where can I get an add on fuel gauge that will work with my factory sender. I think 10 - 74 ohm range. 1964 Dodge. All kinds of them for Chebby and Ferd in their ohm range. My sender tests out ok. Thanks for any help................................MO

Autometer has them in many styles. Do you know exactly "why" your OE gauge doesn't work properly, it might be easier and cheaper to fix that. If your shy on diagnostic procedures, they can be found on this board.

I used an autometer gauge hooked right up to the factory sender.

No, evidently I don't know exactly why it is not working right. I have checked so many possibilitys, I am just tired of it. Pins in the plug in to printed circuit. the gas sender wire pin was broken..replaced circuit board. New solid state voltage limiter,..took it to a electronics tech-- he was baffled... The gauge registers in - correcty, only when my light switch is on.. Plenty of advice from this board, none found the problem. ...Thought about running a new wire with a adjustable voltage limiter, and attaching it to the mounting stud for the gas gauge, insulating it from the circuit board with non conductive washers. But I don't want to mess with that instrument cluster any more !
I guess I will go to Auto Meters website and try to find the gauge mentioned in another post....................Thanks for your help. ..............................MO

I cannot find any fuel level gauges at autometer. All kinds of fuel related gauges --except fuel level. Could you send me a link, or how to find what you have.. Thanks...................................MO

A separate ground seemed to be the cure for mine. I just wrote down the mileage for over 20 years and looked for fuel approaching 200. Working odometer.

Installing a ground was one of the first things I did. I have been doing just what you did..and at 200 miles. But now my speedo-odometer shot craps and locked up....................................MO

Your very welcome!
I'm not sure .... I just put the ohm range you put and the first link was Summits...???..
Their tech support should be able to answer any questions you have, if any.... Good people.
Let us know how it goes!

So for those who have used an Auto-Meter fuel gauge, does it read accurate Full-half full-empty? Just curious if this solved the OEM fuel gauge/sender issues?

Just checking in and wanted to see if you made any progress with your gauge issue?
Well, some. My wifey calls my red and white 64 Dodge " Christines brother" LOL It just keeps kicking my a** ! I been twisting wrenches for 55 years ( not professionally) Now I have low vision, not flexible , and can't get off the floor without something to hang on to! No more speedo aggravation, as the head froze up and does not work at all now.
After being to two alignment shops--one of them twice, and my own fiddleing around, I got the steering working great-- a real pleasure to drive.. Lost all power to tach, brake lights, turn signals and I don't know what all. Thank goodness, that was just wires came un-plugged from the ignition switch..

Now for the fuel gauge..I bought a new Stewart- Warner after market, with the correct Mopar Ohm range, mounted below the dash. Completly isolated the wireing from the factory gauge. I had a friend do it as I didn't want to get under the dash. I swear, when I picked the car up this afternoon. the gauge registered 3/4 full and that is about where the gas left in the tank would have been. I drive 30 miles home and now the gauge shows full !!! grrrrrr. I put the car in the garage, shut the door, and I'm not going to even talk to it till tomorrow...........................................MO

Man, it sounds like you can't catch a break with that gauge! Well I was rooting for ya! Thanks for the update, keep us posted!
Good luck!

How much fuel would you have used in 30 miles? Sounds like the sender wire grounded some where.

I now have run several miles with needle still showing full. Been checked on the shorted sender wire. A mechanic friend loaned me a variable setting ohm meter. . I can hook it up in line with the sender wire, and adjust the ohms to the gauges ohm range and that will show if the gauge works correctly......................................MO

Today's update. We checked the new fuel gauge with the variable ohm test meter. The new gauge and wire to it from sender does work as they should . Pulled the sender out ( that I thought was OK) and OMG ! The sock was completly gone and the float wire was stuck inside the resister. I thought the guy that cleaned and sealed the tank said it was OK CRS strikes again! . Late Tuesday I ordered a new 3/8 fuel sending unit from 521 restorations Jeff is an A-1 vender. good price and he checks them out before shipping. I received them Thursdays mail. Looks like great quality and all stainless steel. Put the fuel sender in today and WOOOO--Haaaaww. I now have a working gas gauge. !!! And I think it reads the correct fuel level. Supposed to be a nice day tomorrow, so will be out cruise'in before Winter ................................MO
