How are the fender mounted signals grounded?

Our 71-74 mini-fender mounted turn signal lights are a one wire hook-up with a lot of insulated gaskets and foam. With my new paint and the factory undercoating on the inside of the fenderwell, I wonder how these things will ground themselves when I get around to replacing them on the car? Anything to be concerned about? Thank you.

I am not positive but I believe the mounting screw acts as the ground. Even with the gasket the screw still touches the fender.

OK, I see the "retainer" has a ridge/bulge pointing up which would be toward the fender and provide a contact point.

If they are anything like the 70 hood mounted turn signals....then the fixing stud/screw acts as the ground.

You can add a ground lead, ring connector under the mounting stud nut on a 18ga wire, run it to the turn signal connection in the forward light harness. There is a third connection in the plug that is part of the forward lighting ground circuit. Don’t have to depend on very tight mounting to get a ground though the paint and undercoating.

Thats 71/72

On 73/74 the gasket and socket are same assembly, the metal to ground is inserted into the rubber mold reaching the bulb contact to the socket When you screw it to fender, makes the ground

Here is what I talk about the 73 and lates assembly. Exposed areas of the metal strip into the rubber mold on top and bottom, BUT the real good ground is made when the screw goes through the gasket/mold hole. Screw threads makes contact with this metal strip ( which is also present on hole ) and then with the fender when screwing into. This strip gets one of the socket leads.

Here is visible a file of the metal strip into the screw hole on first pic.

Also the exposed provisions of the metal strip on top of the mold makes contact with the chromed housing which is of course hold by the screw to the fender.

I put some in my barracuda fenders (fiberglass hood), soldered a ground wire on the lower housing w/ elec solder gun, just to make sure I won`t have any trouble w/ them.

Update: Now that the ground question is answered, just wondering wny one fender turn signal lead is only 9 inches long and the other is 48 inches long? Both leads seem to be factory original. There is no way the short lead will reach to the plug in the grille area near the headlight/front turn signal wiring! Hopefully someone has an answer before I begin cutting, stripping, and adding 39 inches of 18 gauge wire to the factory connections.
