On the ground - 173 mph (290 km/h) in a new 1991 BMW 7-series sedan, on the German Autobahn.
In the air - .98 Mach in a British Airlines 747-400. Pilot came across the intercom and told us!
On the water - 83 mph in a buddies' bass boat. Of the three, the boat was by far the scariest!

You do know diesel is very popular in Europe? And also it is a higher energy fuel than gasoline.

Anyways, I got my 1999 mustang GT to a bit over 135 when it was about a year old. That was top speed for the car. Not super fast, I thought it would do more honestly.

165mph in my 97 C5 vette , 140mph in a 68 Charger ( back in 1969) 135mph in my S bird , 130mph in my 08 300 C And 545mph in a 747.

My wife figured out that I will drive like I'm in a race unless someone is with me I can't take someone else's life in my hands so I drive properly. Death no, jail time oh yeah. If you get caught 50kms/hr over up in these parts...bye bye license and car, with a hefty fine. Jail time is possible depending on the circumstances. No thanks, I'd rather do it on the track.

I am aware of the popularity of Diesel in Europe. The reasons are not necessarily related to "energy content" but more to the fact that fuel economy is far greater.
When was the last time you saw a naturally aspirated Diesel anything make more horsepower than a same size gasoline engine? You probably haven't. Diesels are torque engines. Remember that Diesel engine that spun to 5800 rpms? Yeah... me either. They are usually done around 3500.
The only American Diesel engines making any power are real heavyweights in heavy trucks.

Regarding your Mustang and its top speed: It may have been capable of more. Many times, the computer is calibrated to limit the top speed based on the OEM tire selection and the speed rating of that tire. Hack the computer and be a baller.

That is why diesels have turbos. And it took so long to get to about 137, i dont think it had anything left. But it sure could get to 100 in a hurry.

I worked @ Warlock offshore power boats in 93-94......out in ocean in twin 502, 28 ft Cat touching 90........being a passenger, it scared the crap out of me in the deep swells.

He let me take it down Summerlin Pky before there was any housing, just palm tree lined new black top. 165 was the pucker factor in 5th gear, lots O Fun.

Those ZR-1 engines are badass.
Basically an LT-1 geometry block redesigned by Lotus with DOHC heads & yes, all the castings were done by Mercury

Not the fastest, but very exciting.......105 mph on a perfectly flat section of 405 near 110 exchange(same both directions)in my old Tioga/Dodge 22 ft. Class C Idk, but that 360 had breath to 6500......must have been a good day for valve springs. I'd counterlock the tigger too.....no **** sideways with the frame twisted like a pretzel & inside front wheel easy foot off ground. Hell it wasnt even that long ago,,
2004-2007.
