My friend found a picture of his dads old 66 satellite ! sent it to me and asked If I could tell weather it was a 318 car or a 383 car. He would like to know. Can you guys "being I am not a B body pro by no means" tell weather its a 318 car or a 383? any way of telling other then trying to read the emblem on the fender? I would guess 318. your opinions guys. Thanks,

Think it's a 318 car. Believe it would have 383 engine call out between front wheel opening and door. Same as a 426 Hemi call out.

Could have would need VIN. maybe a 361?
5th digit
A 170-6cyl
B 225-6cyl
C 273-v8
D 318-v8
E 361-v8
F 383-v8
H 426 Hemi v8
Forgot about 361 Never saw a call out on front fender or by the rear of front wheel well for one. Looked in my parts book there is no 361 behind the front wheel opening. So it could have been a 361.
Tommie69 would have to know someone who looked under hood and could say where the distributor was front or back of engine. front=361.

Mine had Commando V8 emblems out on the ends of the fenders.

Tried to straighten it but can't see any more details. Although I like how the picture was taken when the car was only a couple years old.

On some models the style of the wheel covers were either low end or top of the line. Those wheel covers look like top of the line to me.
What do the experts think?

I agree. Knock-off wheel covers were the poor-man's mags.

Small block cars would have had "v8" emblems on the fenders.

Big block cars would have had "Commando v8" emblems.

273 hood ornament would say "v8", all other v8 engines would have the displacement.

Fender badges with displacement is a Dodge thing, except IIRC for 426.

Is it just me, or is the front end up a little. Like maybe a small block is sitting between the fenders.

...also (and again) there is an error in the 66 Plymouth FSM on engine VIN digits.

There was a correction issued.

F- 361 (all 2 barrels in B body in 1966)
G- 383 (all 4 barrels in B body in 1966)

Pretty sure those C, D and E codes are wrong as posted above as well.

Those C,D and E were taken out of factory service manual not a repo manual. The engine call out I agree is probably a Dodge thing except for Hemi's. Can't argue about F and G 2barrel/ 4barrel either. YY1 I agree with your disagree on post#2. Should have done some more research and I still think I'd get it wrong. Forgot about Dodge call outs and only 426 Hemi call outs on Plymouth's.

You can SEE the Commando V8 badge just under the Satellite badge.
They came only on 361 or 383 cars.
You'd need to see a pic of the back of the hood ornament, or remember real hard...
Was the back of the ornament reddish (361) or goldish/silverish (383)?
I love my spinner wheel covers.

Wait a cotton pickin minute there...
273 ornament was diecast front and back both sides with full boat motif.
273s did have V8 badges at front of fenders, as did poly 318s.

Unless somehow special ordered, in a 66 Belvedere or Satellite, there was 361 2 bbl only, or 383 4 bbl only, that got Commando badges. Same cam in either.
