Wondering if any of you have ever run into this problem or have any recommendations. I am replacing my heater core in my 70 charger (its an Air Conditioning car). I bought a new heater core and noticed that when I slipped the O-ring into the groove of the heater core pipe, the O-ring doesn't even stick up above the outer diameter of the pipe (maybe by .001-.002 at the most). So I measured the O-ring groove diameter on my original core and the new core.

Original heater core O-ring groove diameter = .574
New heater core O-ring groove diameter = .555
Difference = .019

It seems that the smaller diameter (smaller by .019) on the new heater core O-ring groove is enough that the O-ring doesn't even stick up above the pipe outer diameter. Also, on my new H-pipe, the O-ring clearly sticks up above the outer pipe diameter.

So bottom line is, I am very skeptical that this O-ring will be sufficient to seal against the heater pipe that it connects to that then runs to the outside of the firewall. Has anyone else noticed this on new heater cores or run into this problem, or am I just being overly paranoid? The new heater core pipe is on top in the picture and the H-pipe is on the bottom.

Quite a bit of difference there, I dont see it sealing well.

Agree, mine is with Bob right now. They charge $250 to recore it. Not a lot different than a reproduction.

Seems like the obvious solution to me...

Yeah, I agree that the o-ring is "marginal". At O'Reilly they have a large red box of o-rings behind the counter & one of the managers will know where it is (good luck with counter people). That's a quick/easy/cheap first place to look for a thicker o-ring.
