Help W/Big Block Selection

I'm just about finished with suspension rebuild, shocks, disc conversion and more.

Now I'm racking my brain looking at engine options. Let me tell you what I'm after, budget and options under consideration.

Goals:
500-600hp streetable. Engine needs to be able to handle power brakes, power steering and A/C.
Reliable and not finicky - this is a 5th car and will get driven once per week at most
Great Gas Mileage - Just kidding. Making sure you guys are still with me ;-)
Looks Great - Not trying to be a $200k show car but want it to look great
Bang for buck - overall best bang for buck compilation of all the above
Budget - $8k-$12k. That said, for the awesome value could go up. Just remember I'm not trying to drag race the car. Just want better than average power, sound, looks etc.

Options:

Indy Cylinder 500 Mod Man Wedge $10,150 - 600hp/600tq Warranty? http://www.indyheads.com/bbengines.html

MRL Performance 493 or 505 $9300 - 550hp/600tq. Written warranty? Complete from carb to oil pan with water pump, dist/wires/plugs/ignition, Aluminum heads, HFT cam, double roller timing set, ARP main studs, Manley head bolts, damper, dyno run for break-in/tuning.

Open to any other good options. To the engine selection above I suppose I would add TTI headers and Billet serpentine kit.

Lets hear your perspective - I'm sponging it all in!
 
If it was me I would go with the Indy, I think blue print made their name building chevy motors? Could be mistaken... never heard of mrl so no opinion on them. Indy knows mopar
 
I know I've mentioned it before but check out the Trick Flow 240 top end kit ($4k) its a 10.5 motor made 620hp/576tq... might leave you some change to beef everything else up! If I had $10k to burn this would be it....They are making a 270 MW port now too but haven't seen any numbers...

I built a 456 stroker (I believe it's known as a 451 with the typical bore) using a 400 block and 440 crank. Pretty cheap reliable 500hp with a fairly mild cam and 452 heads. It's bolted to a 6 speed standard, is very mild mannered and very reliable.

That kit won't work as my car has a 360 in it now.
 
I am a novice. My 440 has about 500 at the crank, 415+rwhp chassis dyno. Everyone I know with significantly more hp lacks reliabilty and are most times looking for race gas or screwing around with timing, pinging, etc and can't get it to a car show that is close by. Mine can run the crappy pump 91 here, and be reliable. Choices!

I thought you were looking at RB's, you could build a hell of a shortblock to go with that top end and still be way under budget...
Just throwing an option out there..
 
With A/C, and the other things you mentioned...I'm assuming you're building something more for handling and comfort. I'd build a pump-gas, torque based engine. Your horse-power range is easily obtainable, without breaking the bank or getting very radical. Big cubes, decent aluminum heads, and a hydraulic roller, will make a great driver with plenty of grunt.
 
600hp and reliability won't mix. a stock bottom will explode at that level. don't get lost in all the internet/magazine horsepower numbers; they're rubbish.
 
The stock bottom-end is questionable, but 600 hp and reliable is easy.
 
I hope to make 620 on the motor with my 512 and trickflow heads but if it makes 580 I'll be very happy and use a small plate kit.

You will see my dyno pull on here but at this point there are only walls and exhaust plumbed into the dyno cell.

I'm very nervous about the stock block
 
Stock block is ok,rods if massaged with new ARP bolts are fine @ 600 hp.Forged crank is a must. What are you skeeered of??
 
For what you are doing, you don't need to make 600HP.
Picking a HP number because you've been jaded by magazine articles that have you thinking you need 600HP to make it to the car show with the air blowing cold and sounding like a race car is not reality.

Build a pump gas 440.
 
It's fairly easy to make 1hp per cubic inch these days but I'm thinking you probably should focus on torque. You didn't mention what car you are going to use or how heavy it'll be but even with a 4000 lb loaded up 69 roadrunner will haul butt with a mild but well tuned stock stroke 440. Like I mention, it's fairly easy to make it 440/440 but it's not that much harder to do 1.25 hp per inch. Also, how much tire are you willing to shove up under it to handle 550 hp? You already know what the Hellcat has but that thing is controlled by miles of electronics stuffed into it......hint hint :D

At 600 HP,why would you worry about a stock block.When prepped right 700 HP is no problem.
 
I have to side with Lewlot and Cranky on this one. Easy to get 1 hp per cubic in, but torque is where it's at for a street motor. Check out Muscle Motors street krate, 500 cu in, will run all day long on pump gas for $8500. Add an EFI system, and smile, you're still under budget. Or just have your builder of choice follow that formula.
Haven't purchased any from MM in a few years, but installed one for a customer's 68 Bee. Had a couple annoying leaks over the years, but basically untouched - still happy.

Helped a buddy several years back build a stroker based on a 400 block. 493 irrc. It ran a 10 ohhhhh off the trailer and with some tuning, it was doing 9.90 pretty quickly but with a small shot of the stoooopid gas it did 9.30.
