I have a 62 fury its has an 8 3/4 rear end its a 741. It has not been on the road in quite a few years. I was surprised when i pulled off the drums to find the studs are not on the axle but are attached to the drum. I have looked on the internet but have not been able to find any thing written about this. Some one told me they thought it was called a floating axle. Was this standard for these rear ends or do i have an odd ball. I know its original because it was my dads car and he said he never changed it out. does anyone have any insight to these?

And how the heck did you get that tapered hub and brake drum off without asking us how to do it.?? I have never heard of one that came off easily. ..............................MO

the pads were stuck to the drum but with some smacks with a hammer they both came right off. I was worried I wouldn't get the rest of the break assembly off because the nuts looked rusted but with a little penetrating oil everything came right off. I need to replace everything and since I already converted the front to disk I am going to rebuild the back with disk also.

Hey peak, they are called taypered axles. They were discontinued in late 1964. Most '65s have the flanged axle but on a rare occasion a early '65 might have one.
So if you research "mopar taypered axle" you will find some info.

I haven't gotten to this part of my 1962 Dodge project yet but I want to keep this housing in my car because of it's narrow measurement. Yes you can replace this rear with the newer flange type axles but they are a bit wider in overall lenth. About 5/8" on both ends. They will work but it will set the wheels out that much. A different offset in the wheels will give you the wheel well clearance but I personally don't like the look of the wheel with the centers sitting that far out in the rim.

I have a 2.92 open gear in the housing now and want to changet over to a 3.23 limited slip that I bought. The axles are different lengths between the open rear and the limited slip on the taypered axle housings. The limited slip axles are shorter.

I want to convert to a flanged axle with green bearings, which you would probably have to do with a disk brake setup. I might have to have the axles made to the correct lenth. I'm sure this has been done but it's been a big secret over the years that I've been researching this change. Nobody's talking!

I'm thinking Moser or Dr.Diff will know the answers that I'm looking for but I haven't contacted them yet. I'll be following this thread. Also feel free to contact me with any questions or on what you find.

My brain is a little slow. The tapered axle housing is a little narrower, but converting it to flange axles in the taper axle housing makes the width between the axle flanges wider?? Why not make things simpler, less costly, and easy to install disc brakes on a ( for instance) 1965 housing? bolts right in and gives plenty of wheel- well room. ...........................MO

No, useing a newer housing makes everything wider. The '65 housing is ideal for the conversion but just try to find one. And if you do you'll have to sell your first born to afford it. After '65 the housings kept getting wider.

Yes, they do get a bit wider and sometimes need more backspace in the wheels to maximize tire width. I was lucky I guess. I was given a 65 complete rear member for taking off all the front fenders, grille, etc from a B body mopar and I had to remove the 65 complete rear member. Nice that the car was sitting on a flatbed truck and easy to get to........................MO

talked with Dr Diff today to order brakes unfortunately he said i would have to replace those axles. Hes sending me everything i need brake conversion kit axles and parking brake cable. I will attach picture when installed.

I'm guessing the new axles will use green bearings too?

He said he will send all bearings and seals needed to get everything back together. I trust it will turn out right. He set me up with my front brakes and i was real happy
with the way they turned out. He was a lot of help.

Nothing wrong with Early resend except need puller to take drum off. The hub press fit inside drum. The hub drum combo goes over axel as one price. This will work good with ceramic brake drum 13 inch as in big new style brakes.
