Hey Guys,

Can anyone recommend a stock replacement harmonic balancer for a 440 4bbl? I'm looking for a new one that is as close to stock as possible, which I believe doesn't have timing markings on the balancer. The one's I found from Summit all have the timing markings.

Thank you

Try Mancini and 440 source, both offer quite a few balancers

I had good luck with the professional products sfi approved black one.
I have a Professional Products balancer I pulled from my 440. I bumped it with a wire wheel while cleaning the block (before paint) so there is a small section that the timing marks are rubbed off. other then that's its in great shape. you could blast it and paint it stock color and not feel bad about taking off the numbers. Best of both worlds.

$50 bucks takes it.

All of the one's those sites show had the timing marks on the balancer. Am I correct in saying that the stock one didn't?

Stock balancers only had one mark (TDC). Make SURE you get the correct balancer (there are 3 that I know of all for 440 4 bbl.) Big Rod (aka "six pack") which has a "horse shoe" weight in front, Small Rod which is symmetrical & cast-crank which is about twice the thickness of the other two balancers. Now that I think of it, I "think" some cast-crank balancers are beveled in front & others are not??? Not sure about that last statement.

I believe you are correct. 440source has a great write up on it.

I'm surprised finding stock ones without timing marks is so hard.

Stock balancers don't have timing marks, only a thin slot for timing. Degrees are marked on a tab, off the timing chain cover.
440...need to know if crank is forged, or cast, since the balancers are different. Thick one for cast.

Ah ok. That confirms what I have.

My crank is forged, non-6 pack rods.

Is this for a show car? I have a cover that only goes 15 degrees before and 10 after. Unless the balancer is for a show car that's going for points, I'd rather have the timing marks that goes well past 15 degrees. Other than that, you could lay on several coats of paint and then sand it down to where the marks do not show and then lay a finish coat on it. High build primer will fill in the numbers pretty fast....

Do you think a high build primer by itself would work to cover the timing numbers, then just top coat?

If you have an old one, this guy does rebuilds. If you need an old one, I have one off a 1969 440 h.p. standard rods motor for the cost of shipping.

Just get a stock one from a member here, or a salvage yard for a 440 steel crank motor. Wire wheel it, paint it, and bolt it on. An aftermarket one may work too, but you DO want the TDC groove left on there, so you know where TDC is. Check the timing cover, and the balancer to make sure your TDC marks are showing TDC accurately.

Here are a few pics you asked for. The wear on the snout from the front cover seal cannot be felt with my fingernail.
