I have a '67 Coronet 440 4-dr with a little 318, that has been my daily driver for the past 3 years... It has 4-wheel drums that use the little 10"x2-1/2" shoes. They don't last worth a damn, I pretty much replace the front ones every couple of months. Brakes otherwise work ok, I mean, they are drums. I usually buy from RockAuto, have tried all the brands, Raybestos, etc., but they all pretty much suck. Does anyone know of a performance drum brake shoe, that maybe even gives you a choice of shoe material other than organics, something aggressive and longer lasting than the usual meager stock offerings out there (like a ceramic shoe)? Seems the only thing available are stock, rebuilt, mild braking shoes. I don't mind paying race-aftermarket brake prices if I could find them (would rather not switch to discs if I can avoid it). Any ideas?? Thanks!

those look great, actual ceramic shoes too. They don't seem to list the shoes alone for my car, only as a kit ('...in a Box'), but I would guess they might sell them anyway, I'll give them a call... Thanks 440+6!

I sounds like you need to anticipate your stops so you use less brakes
and on hills you have more gears to use

Probably the best info I found lately, thanks for that post.

Call Porterfield in Costa Mesa ca. They will last and work great, but your drums will wear out sooner

The ------------------- O N L Y ------------------ braking system that works WELL --- ask anyone who knows ----
is NEW OLD STOCK ++++++ ASBESTOS +++++++ which has been outlawed for production here in the United States for 25 years.....
The Good News ---- I have N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ Brake Shoes -- that are NOT illegal -- because they fall under the statutes that they
were manufactured before the jurisdiction.......
I was just down in your state for the last 6 days @ Chryslers @ Carlisle ----- and had plenty with me ---- the Great News -- is that I still
have more ........ ask Tim Winnie from Pittsburgh, who was there (a Big Penguins fan --- we talk all winter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
-------------- Call me immediately ---- Craig --***********.... Long Island, New York.......

+1 for Porterfield R4. Relative to an organic friction material, they will wear the drums more; but, not very much especially considering how much better they perform. (and much more friendly than hawk race pads on rotors)

I'm looking for another option besides $200 brake shoes. Im getting ready to upgrade my 10" rear drums to 11×2.5's and was hoping for a more cost effective option. Any thoughts?

As indicated, I have N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ Brake Shoes for it ----- you CAN'T do better than that!!!!!!!!!!!
and much less expensive....... where were you at the just completed Fall Carlisle and Hershey ??????? Had them there...........
will PM you, as per their new rules (How dare I be up front & honest -- and give you my phone number here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Yours, Craig.......

Porterfield in Costa Mesa California or maybe Newport Beach right on the border if so. You can send them shoes to reline them with gnarly stuff that kind of looks like a fire hose, big waffly lining with brass chunks in it. They're kind of noisy when for the first couple stops when they're cold but they work excellent

With everything in working order and proper adjustment they should last for years. I don't think the shoes are the problem.
I've had rear shoes last for over 100,000 miles.

the brake shoes they make nowdays are total crap. being a mechanic i see lots of failures with OTC brake parts. sometimes the new shoes are thinner linings than the old ones. seen lots of shoes that glaze over with 1 or 2 stops too. brake parts are so bad now that im almost to the point that im not gonna do brakes anymore

Porterfields are the only ones I know that are more performance oriented, their disk pads are amazing as well!

Top Banana -- haven't from you ---- or the bunch yet.............
Magvan is 100 % correct ---- if you feel the difference between N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ and this new garbage that all of the "theys"
are forced to sell ---- you will be an EXPERT in 1 1/2 seconds........
That is why it is CRITICAL to use ++ N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ for a car you LOVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fortunately, I HAVE a lot of N.O.S. ++ Asbestos ++ ----- and am always hunting down more...................

I have many times in the past used Bayshore Friction Material in San Jose California.

I had them re-line all four set of shoes with what was called "Velvet Touch" lining. Always gave my 1964 Polara 500 the ability to stop on a dime no matter what rain or shine.

I am not sure its still available or not, but I will be looking soon as I will be doing my current Polara the same way I did 40 years ago.
