67 Satellite play in steering column

I wonder if any of you guys can point
Me in the right direction?
My 67 satellite has a lot of play in the steering column if you hold the steering wheel you can move it up and down excessively is there a bushing or other component in the column I can replace?

There are sheer pins in the shaft. It has either collapsed or the sheer pins have just became brittle and fell apart.they are plastic. Its built in as a safety feature so the column doesn't become a spear.

Did collapsible steering columns start in 67? My 66 does not have one and there are no plastic shear pins?

Ahh well thats a good question. Im not really sure.

As I recall "collapsible" steering columns started in 1970. The shear pins seem like a starting effort at safety.

The column in the 69 Roadrunner is a floor shift column and it has the ignition switch on the dash. The column has the shear pins. So maybe it started in 68?

It seems there is a ton of attempted fixes for this problem But why not just drill the hole all the way through the lower shaft and use nylon nuts and bolts to go through the shafts. They would still shear off in the event of a crash. Seems like it would work just as the original was intended.

I just realized he was talking about up and down not in and out. My bad, If thats the case then watch this series of videos.. It walks through a rebuild. I know it says cuda and challenger but the information should be relevant to your column.

Yes my issue is that you can move the column up and down when holding the steering wheel

There are plastic spacers on the bracket that holds the column in place. If the column is moving up and down I would look where the bolts hold it up and see if the plastic spacers are there.

My '68 has the collapsible column, just for general knowledge...
