Hey all, I was wondering what people are using to rebuilt their power steering coupler on a 64 b-body? Do you have to adapt a later model coupler kit to fit?

The reason I was asking was because I couldn't find a kit specifically for the 64 coupler housing. All I could find was kits for later housings. So I figured they didn't make them. Nice build by the way.

I'll have to look through my receipts. I believe I bought one on ebay. Joe Suchy should have them. He's your '62 - '65 go to guy!

I'm Back!

Ok, it's been a couple of years and I did buy a kit. It wasn't correct.

Two problems with this is the clip/spring and the cover. I don't remember if the shoes were correct either.

Remember we have the early one that is rectangle in shape and not the newer one that has a slightly rounded housing . Also ours uses a clamp at the steering box shaft and not a split pin.

The kit has a rounded cover, not rectangular.

The kit has a spring that has a pointed center to it and I don't think it will go into the housing. I re-used mine. The spring is what's normally found broken in these couplers. I lucked out.

You can see the original isn't as pointed.

So you can see the differences. I re-used my cover by gently opening the tabs, just enough to remove it. Any more they could break.

I did use the new seal but I cut the rounded edge off. Use the original cover for a template.

If you're just concerned about the seal, you can buy them seperate. All of my parts were in good shape. Ended up being just a cleaning and re-lube. You dont have to remove the pin if it's good. The seal and cover will slide over it. Take note on how the shoes and spring are orientated.

When installing the coupler onto the steering box shaft, use the measurement from the hole in the shaft to set the correct distance. That's why the hole is there. (See my thread) There is a small flat spot or tooth missing on the splines to line them up. If you have a broken spring or worn parts, contact Joe Suchy. He'll know whats available.

I'll add this thread to my build thread for a update.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me some info and pics. I appreciate it. I have heard about the later spring not working.
