My understanding is federal law mandate was the demise of the push buttons. But I could be wrong.
Had done a lot of research on the demise of the buttons and at one time appeared Ralph Nader had a hand in this; but further sifting dispelled this as well as any laws that arrived as well. That's not to say the gov had no play here. There was some laws produced about how shifting arrangement had to be and it included a park setting conjoined in the pattern. This forced changes with the location of the R setting, no longer allowed at the end of the pattern like GM had. Although this still didn't hit the button's demise head on as the location of the R had to be between the N setting and forward gears as the buttons had. There were threats for sales though from the gov buying Mopars for their fleets and rental agencies. Add a new top exec came to Chrysler who wanted them gone as they were the only ones hanging on to the buttons and the other's GM/Ford) didn't have them. The guy saw this as a threat being too 'different' influencing sales potential. The reverse of the nifty feature they had when they were introduced. The appeal of 'different' became a ball & chain. Add there was a stark love & hate for buttons among the buying public. On a personal note, my parents bought a '57 Merc and came to despise the buttons because Ford's setup was **** compared to Chrysler's. After this they wouldn't come within miles of a button shift despite Chrysler's reliable and durable torqueflite..

In '57 Ford tried to jump on the Chrysler push button bandwagon that came out in '56. They had them in the Mercury and the Edsel, and in the Edsel for some woefully odd reason were placed in the center of the steering wheel! A great bit of nostalgia or uniqueness for collectors. As a youngster I remember my mom getting all pissed at the buttons in the Merc. They occasionally would stick and get her all flustered. My dad didn't like them when we got stuck in a blizzard and rocking the car btw D and R was a hassle as they didn't react very quickly least as far as I recall...I was knee high to a lot of stuff then. Not long after the Merc went bye-bye. I think if Ford would have taken time to engineer the system better they might a not been in such as hurry to dump them fast as they came out with them.
