Do you have a slash/mulch program?

I'm wondering if this is just a Colorado thing. You take your pine tree slash to a big site and dump them for free. They have a giant chipper maybe 15 yards in diameter that turns it into mulch. Then people go and pick up as much mulch as they want for free.

We do it here by municipality. It’s not decorative mulch though.

They have free mulch across the river in Quincy and you can get it by the pickup load. But for some reason I don't like the thought of old smelly old town yard waste/dirt etc. eeeeuuuuuu

Here we pay to dump or bring it to a company that charges then mulches then sells it. Every one not in city limits has a burn pile. Big ones after the recent snow.Gets cut off around June depending on how wet it still is. After about 8-10 in in the past week it is wet.

It literally took years to talk my wife into rocks (she wasn't doing the work) and I'll never go back! Now a leaf blowed is all that's ever needed.

We used to get free mulch from the sawmill until they decided charge $45 a load, I can buy the good stuff for just a few bucks more. Never heard of the pine mulch, mostly hardwood trees around here.

That concept has been in this state since the 70s, why does it rouse your curiosity to post it here on a car forum?

I was thinking about hauling some branches off but it's not open yet. I've been here 20 years but our slash/mulch is relatively new. It really came into being after the Black Forest fire. People started to thin out the forest to keep it from happening again. The fire was finally stopped on our ranch. It seems like such a good concept I wondered if other areas had it. My curiosity knows no bounds.

The thing with recycled multch, grass clippings, leaves, ect. is they don't always let it get up to temperature enough to kill all the insects, weed seeds and fungus. Plus it can really stink!

I've been getting mine from Lowes when I need it. They have good sales on it several times a year. I prefer the dark shredded hardwood. It's heavy and doesn't blow away. Normally last for two years. They mix a little top soil with it that adds weight and compose for the flower beds.

That service sure as hell isn't free up in this part of Colorado, it costs money to drop off at commercial mulching company as well as to buy mulch, so all my trimmings end up in the land fill, plus my HOA has a spring cleanup where they bring in dumpsters for 24 hours to throw as much yard waste in before they get full, and those go to the land fill! The city also chargers per yard, usually between 5 and 7 bucks a yard to drop off! Pity that they don't figure out how to do this for free like you mention!

I've been clearing my woods of vines and damaged trees caused by them for 3 years now, what's big enough for firewood heats the house then the rest gets chewed up by the brush hog or burned. I feel for all the guys in dry parts of the country, here in Ohio you never have to wait long for a good wet day to light it on fire. If I had to haul it away I don't know what I'd do.

They seriously mix topsoil in, no wonder I hated that stuff! I'd lay out thick plastic then bury it in mulch trying to rid the area of weeds and the crap would grow out of the mulch, now I know why.

Sure they do, just wait for the next big wet snow storm to break off a bunch of branches then they have a surplus. Free pickup of branches and as much free mulch as you can haul off. It happens all the time.

I live out of town. I have a brush pile I burn around twice a year. I cut most up for fire wood in my house and a fire pit outside. I put my leaves on the garden after everything is up and dont have any weeds to pull. I make compost from all non meat waste and leaves with grass clippings. Its all a little work but I normally have a great garden and give a lot to older people at church that cant garden anymore. I am popular for a old grouch when the garden is being picked. I started a thread about gardening on here a few years ago but it didnt go far.

then you'll pay thru the ***, the next times
it's free to dump 1 pickup or utility trailer a year
of green waste/slag, tree trimmings or mulching material etc.

I wouldn't know, I never asked or wanted any...
If I needed to grind the stuff up I went & rented a grinder...
We had a bunch of trees removed that were dying or rotten
I couldn't hardly give the mulch/grindings away,
I asked everyone if they needed any for the yards or gardens...
Nope most already had enough of their own & I had to haul it off...

Oh well, such is life....

I too, have gravel & decorative, grey, white & road base rock everywhere...
All mostly it's because of a good fire break (not really I hate to do yard work)
I do still have plenty of trees all around me & 5 cedars in the back
& mainly because I really don't like to have to, be mowing lawns
&/or doing yard work constantly, pulling or chopping down weeds etc.
every damn week in nice weather (which in Ca. is a lot)
Killing myself off even quicker
When I could be working on my RR, enjoying the nice weather
or shooting, hunting, fishing, skiing, playing with the dog, cruising
or drinking instead of yard work...
