Tesla electric street drag car

That's like comparing apples to watermelons. Just cause they're round doesn't make them equal and a Telsa isn't the same as a CTS-V just cause it has wheels and seats. This is my biggest bitch with these Electric cars so go ahead and hate on me. Electric isn't free. I work utility construction and now you want to overload out decaying grid with more electric using cars. Oh and lets not forget about the tons of battery inside them. Yeah that doesn't cause issues when needing replaced or disposed of. Guess I'm just old.

Just wait till the government mandates everyone must drive electric cars.

Sorry to hear about your decaying electrical grid, but not every part of the world is like that. Some countries are continuing to add electrical supply in anticipation of future use. Here in British Columbia we have plenty of surplus power, while over in Quebec they've stated that they could handle a million electric cars right now without having to upgrade anything.

There's a lot of value in the lithium in the old batteries, they do get recycled. I can imagine similar conversations back in 1903 when Oldsmobile was setting up production lines - people would say "where are you going to get gasoline for all those cars? Last week there was only two gallons on the shelf at the drug store".

People, corporations and supply lines will adapt to the future. :)

Back in 1903 gas was an unwanted bi-product when making kerosene for lamps.

I personally know of a few folks with electric cars. They sound good for warm sunny areas, but if you live in the North, they wont work as advertised. The biggest issue is heat, conventional gas engines heat the occupant compartment from the engine coolant, while electric cars use well, electricity, thus severely reducing your drivable range. Also, one guy I know just found out he has to replace his battery pack, its 75% of the cost of the car when it was brand new at around $13,500, now he says he has a new "Green paperweight" How will we recycle / dispose of the old batteries? How will that affect their being "Green"? I have heard that tire manufacturers aren't loving the new electric cars since they weigh so much more and are wearing tires out before their advertised achievable miles before needing to be replaced (45,000 mile rated tires are wearing out much earlier). Trust me I know engineers and getting any 2 of them to agree on anything is near impossible, so now we need to get ALL manufacturers to agree on one charging port design then get all the cities to start upgrading their infrastructure so that every time someone re-paves a parking lot they put in charging stations (grocery stores, movie theatres) anywhere people tend to stay at long enough to make charging a worthwhile endeavor. It is kind of like the debate over nuclear power, Germany and Japan got rid of all their nuclear plants and are now burning coal again, wind and solar have proven to be incapable of producing enough power to merit a huge nationwide investment. Decisions, decisions huh?

Do you know where electric comes from ? It doesn't magically appear. I comes from burning huge amounts of natural gas or damming river, it comes from burning coal. It comes from ridiculously loud windmills (which I happen to think are pretty cool) but they are fairly noisy for people living near them. Glad in Canada you have a surplus of electric. And I don't own stock in a buggy company nor do I live in the stone ages but I also live in the real world and know electric cars aren't practical. Wait till the electric companies raise rates so high you can't afford to drive your car..And it WILL happen.

I like that line, but I also am in agreeance here below...

We have hydro and coal-fired electricity generation in NZ, but they will be stretched in no time as more electric cars, home A/C and all the magical gadgets that people 'have to have' come on stream. And our glorious leader has already effectively told oil exploration companies to pack your bags and leave....all because of the green movement that they are in bed with.

Germany didn't get rid of all nuclear power, they still have about 5% of their power atomic energy. As for coal, they burn the same amount of hard and soft coal now as compared to 2002, currently just over 20% of the total power production. Solar accounts for the same percentage as coal, and wind power is even greater - over a quarter of their electricity comes from this right now. Percentages of both solar and wind keep rising each year.

Japan restarted nine atomic reactors last year. True, about a third of their power comes from coal, but even more comes from natural gas. Their solar production has gone from nothing to 4% in the last decade.

Remember hearing that hydrogen was the future in cars, then it's electric. Heard years back talking about small reactor for automobile. So far fossil fuel is the simplest. Simplest answer is usually the correct one. Hear people say save the environment, yeah at the cost of our freedoms. Live on a green platform, while the elites continue to do just what they always have, two sets of rules. I dont want to live like the germans, Canadian, French. Waiting for wind turbines to start spinning, waiting for medical care. Waiting for someone like ocassio to tell me sorry but you've reached you energy allotment of electricity, hope you stay warm.

Yep that's the key, SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT. But here's the thing about wind and solar, both take HUGE HUGE amounts of real estate to produce enough electric to amount to anything and then the people crying about SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT are now crying about the lost last and the eyesore, or the birds killed LOL. Most people who are in favor of electric cars don't have a clue what it takes to produce sufficient amounts of electric. You all want to save the environment, then make a few less trips to Walmart every week, car pool, stop taking flights to Vegas for a weekend. There's the simple answer !

I live right here is good ol C.A. right over the hill from Tesla. Funny thing is, they moved their battery plant out of the state to Nevada for environmental reasons!
Someone, not sure who exactly, did the "carbon footprint" of one Tesla battery from birth to death. From production to destruction. Come to find out, one battery is equivalent to driving a big rig truck for 7 years straight!
The state of Illinois installed new wind generators. After the initial investment for installation, they kept having maintenance issues which tacked on more to the investment... after the first year they were shut down having cost millions and only generating $8500 worth of electricity.
FYI.

Don't know if Popular Mechancs qualifies as fair and balanced! . I don't think they actually calculated the impact of the materials used in the production of the batteries or the disposal of those products after the fact.
Coming from CA, my big issue are these arrogant, rich, better than everyone else, POS Tesla/Prius drivers that got money back from the state for buying the car. My tax dollars go for so much crap in this state rather than actually fixing our infrastructure it's annoying when these drivers think they have zero footprint and look down on everyone else. It's just annoying.
As for Illinois, don't know where your info came from, but my family lives there, I'm from there, and the wind gens are being shut down because that state, just like CA, has a miss appropriation of funds problem. Seems like a perfect reason to want them running, but the maintenance costs seem to be out of control.
All that being said, Zero Motorcycles are produced in my town, they are great, love them! So fun to ride, but still. If you plug them into the wall to charge and your not on 100% solar, they have an impact too.
