Missing Link 68 Roadrunner, he left & went to Ford & drove a Torino, they were more aerodynamic & mainly because Plymouth wouldn't give him a wing car, he asked for, like the Dodge had the 69 Daytona Chargers, that why the 70 Superbird's came about, Plymouth wanted Petty back really badly & had to come up with a Winged Plymouth, for him....

Montauk1969, I remember an article in Car Craft magazine that talked about that very car. It was either 1985 or 1986 that the issue came out and it told the story behing it with the one and only picture of the car sitting in the drive way of one of the marketing staff. It was a 68 Roadrunner that had a 426 Hemi that was "souped up" with a 4 speed. Black steel wheels and a molded in duck tail spoiler with hood pins on the hood and the trunk lid. The story went that Richard Petty went up to Detroit and while there, the guy from Chrysler had driven Richard to dinner in the car and they got quite a reaction at the restaurant when they saw the car and who got out. The end of the article says they didn't know what ever happend to the car. I have the issue packed away somewhere and plan on looking for it this weekend. With all of the talk about concept cars and such, it brought this car to mind. If anyone has this issue, please post up the article or the pic. If I find mine, I will do the same. Or if there are any Chrysler people from back then who might remember something that would be great too.

Have any of you guys ever been to the Richard Petty museum in Randleman NC, I've heard he has several of his cars in the museum.

Yes many years ago, a few times prior,
there was a few of his older racecars & newer cars too,
3-4 of them, that were there, are in the Hall Of Fame Now,
a Charger, a RR, a Superbird & Lee's car...
{a couple of his fathers cars & the kids cars also}
{the #40 Superbird & 71-72 RR's, #42 Marty Robbins IIRC car also}
But that was far before the financial trouble of late thou, back in IIRC 1997 when I went there,
not sure if he's had or needed to sell off stuff or not now, I'd like to go again some day,
but I rarely have any need or want to travel to the east coast now...

sorry no photos of the facility

I went to his Museum twice last year, well worth the trip. PettyFest is held in May,

Thought it timely to resurrect this good thread.

No. (not counting flat hoods made into Air Grabber hoods)

Technically, Petty's 1971 Plymouth was NOT a Road Runner, but a Satellite,
if you base a Road Runner on a car having the correct indented hood.

The Road Runner hood caused more drag than a flat hood.

There are arguments on various sites over this!!!

On a race car:
Flat hood = Satellite
Indented hood = Road Runner

Pretty simple fact!

yep just sold, at Mecum
his 71 #43 they called it "a RR" & so did the King
(he called it a Plymouth too, never any mention of Satellite)
regardless of the hood style
none came with flushed out windows
or front or rear spoilers
let alone a full fabricated race tuned chassis & cages
or let alone any 600+HP single 4bbl Hemi NASCAR Winston Cup engines,
like they had either

that's the facts too

they got the cars from a builder in those years,
they weren't built by RPI
they were delivered Body In White, as a shell

I highly doubt they weren't designated as a RR or a Satellite
just because it had a flat hood

It was used in Plymouth's marketing campaigns as a Road Runner too

Petty built the Plymouth, and Bakers Charger in house from a body in white.
