Storing your ride

When most of have to store our cars for winter, the one thing to worry about is mice. What do you all use to protect your car from mice? And how effective is it?

Mine are up on stands. Ive greased the stands with bearing grease . And I remove the wheels .

Lots and lots of fabric sheets. Seems to work?? Stuffed into the vents, under the dash ,seats, trunk. Even under the hood around the engine and around the cowl area.

Smells really nice in the spring. lol

I place a few of these around, check once a month.
Bars of Irish Spring soap in the car and under the hood.
They like the dark so if you can leave it uncovered and open the hood.
I also cover the carb opening with a heavy plastic bag and stuff rags in the exhaust, that way no air flows in and out of any cylinder with open valves.
Put away hot and pull the battery cable.

The varmits don’t like the smell or the taste. Plus they’re not damaging like moth balls.

This works, soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and put the cotton balls in a cup in your garage.

Put your sun visors down and move them so its harder for mice to get in headliner. If those rat bast@#ds get in.

Those little bastards can JUMP! I've seen farm equipment with 1/4 inch steel cloth fixed over the exhaust and snorkel openings. They love the insulation in mufflers and the safety of cylinders.

I got those. My old neighbours cat started twitching and dropped like a rock after eating the mice that ate those.

Here's a new one to try! I've not tested this myself tho, so take it with a grain of salt.... You ever notice how your dog goes friggen bonkers if a smoke detector goes off?? You likely also know that they hate it when the low battery alarm makes them "chirp". So how bout throwing old smoke detectors in your stored cars with low batteries. Anybody think the critters will go elsewhere?? Just a wacky thought.

I tried those Tomcat large and small bait packs in the shed and barn years ago. I still check the green bricks periodically. Not one critter has ever taken a nibble as far as I can tell, and I don't find any dead animals layin around either, so I call that one a bust.

I use dryer sheets also, but I think the most important thing is don't have anything mice will eat around the garage. Bird seed, animal food, snacks left in trunks from cruise nites, or even your household garbage. I use a cover called the "Car Jacket". I put the dryer sheets around inside, then trays of dessicant to absorb any moisture. My garage is un-heated, so all the steel sweats when temps ride from icy cold to warm. This bag really stops that drastic changeover. My RT has been restored about 8yrs now, and still looks petty decent...

where I am we don't really do long term winter storage persay
we had snow all last week, a couple feet
I drove my car around today, no snow anywhere near the roads

I always have a couple of Bounce fabric dryer wrinkle protection/softner sheets
regularly in the car, I put 1 under the rear seat 1 in the trunk (just in case)

I live right next to open land, about 40 acres, right behind me
we are 11 miles from town & in a little rural community
out in the sticks
I don't seem to have or notice any rodent problems
not sure if the dryer sheets work or what,
I was told that years ago, been doing it ever since, no mouse, so far so good

I regularly put out mouse/rat traps under the house too
we don't seem to have a big problem
my house is surrounded by gravel for a fire break,
because of all the trees all around us
that may help keep them away too, nowhere to hide
in close proximity to the house, like bushes, shrubs, flowers etc.

my neighbor has gophers really bad, he just put in a new lawn
he's pissed, they're tearing it up/holes everywhere
he traps them now

I had a baby raccoon somehow get locked in my garage
unannounced to me, seems he was sleeping on top my rear tire
I fired up the car, then I saw him run out climb a tree
seems OK I see him there often
raccoons seem to love my 02 F-350 4x4 diesel Dually
they crawl all over it constantly
we have them under our back deck, seems like a birthing spot
every so often

we do have a few neighborhood cats roaming the area too
they may help keep the rodents population down too

I bought a 66 Fury Ragtop about 8 years ago. It sat in a barn prior for years. When I got it home. The rat **** was about 4 inches deep on the floor board. I removed the lower back seat and 6 dead rats mummified. The stench was real bad. Even after all those years of sitting in the barn. Exhaust pipes were full of batting .

I tried a bunch of things, the only thing dryer sheets got me was an awfully smelly car.

Took a 2x4 piece of cedar wood, left over from a swingset, and put it on the rear floorboard, and another in the trunk.

Not a varmint since.

I have a baited mouse trap at the corner of each garage door as well as the service door and another along the foundation wall. I catch at least a half dozen of the little bastards right at the point of entry every year. Body count is at 4...........so far.
