First Uboat Sunk By The USN WW2

My mother and father were both WW2 Navy veterans. I see nothing that should be controversial about the USS Roper choosing to destroy the submarine. The lives of every sailor on board of the Roper would have been at risk if that sub had been able to fire on a stopped ship.

Nice little history lesson. Don't know why you got the red x. Wish that could be explained as to why someone would disagree with this story, especially if there's more to it.
Thanks for posting.

Jerry Hall provided the Red X, I think because he disagrees with the idea that theres any controversy over letting the submariners die rather than rescue them.... I agree with him but don't see why the O/P should receive a Red X when all he did was post the link....

That U boat had sunk 15,000 tons of shipping, how many sailors do you suppose they stopped to rescue?

Friggin phone and fat fingers. I didn't even know that I hit that button. It wasn't intended.

also fat fingers and chromebook to not match

Roper was flagship of Division commanders S.C. Norton's Division 54
A companion of the Jacob Jones which had been sunk
She was among the first to carry radar.
She got a "bip" and just under 3000 yards
At about 700 yards a torpedo passed on the port side
she opened up with her 3" and aa and 50 cal - blowing away the deck gun crew and
holing the sub under the conning tower as it was diving
then dropped 11 depth charges
sub evidently tried to blow tanks or had hull breached but never made it back to the surface
only a couple of dozen bodies recovered
