I'm reverting back to my early years
my Mom gave me flat tops all the time...
High & tight baby...
I have a Wahl trimmer, several different depth attachments
& a cordless groomer/trimmer
I do my own usually
just a #2 - 1/4" tapperd on the sides,
around my ears & along the lower back/neck blended into the side
& #3 - 3/8" for most of the sides & rest of the back,
blend it into the top & neck
& a #4 - 1/2" on the top, sort of flat topped
or a #5 - 5/8" when I'm feeling sassy
when I was younger it was a tad longer
In my teens & 20's I had longer hair, close to my shoulders
parted in the middle, down past my ears on the sides
I've been doing my own now, since the late 80's,
my oldest sister taught/showed me how
I just have a little less hair on top now, I am 60 now after all...
I don't want to look like some ol' dude with long hair
still stuck in the 60's/early 70's, refusing to look "normal",
rebelling against something

I don't need no stinking barber !!!
Before that I went to the barber probably twice a month
$20 a pop, with a tip, sit & BS with the boys & barber
I was 30 - 40 years younger too, had a tad bit more hair...
I've always had thick head of hair...
But;
I didn't look like I was trying to be young,
NO 60's/70's throwback hippies, when I'm not one...
IMO there's nothing worse than seeing some ol' dude
that's obviously going bald, has very little hair on top,
but thinks he has a full head of hair,
with long hair down to the middle of his back or past the shoulders
& he thinks
he's looking cool...
Very, very few people can pull off that look...
IMO most of them, that have it,
aren't them people either...
