71 Dodge Colt build

Doug, Wallace says your son's car has about 850hp at the crank. I'm not sure I would even want that much power in my car. 2400 lbs, 850 hp? I think I'm a little old for that much sauce.
Exactly. It doesn't take much. A junkyard 5.2 with a cam, valve springs, and the ring gaps opened up. Good to go.

Since then with 21psi, Eddy heads, .560" cam, 3.55 its been 9.55@142. More in it power wise. But it has a stock cast crank and block.

DVW,

Are you guys using water methanol injection to cool the intake charge?

You just need to take that engine out and sell me the body. I'll turn it into a tube chassis big block car like this one we raced many moons ago. The front to rear weight bias is something that has to be watched, but I've always thought the 48" wide track width in the front caused more guys to crash. It's so narrow it makes them very unforgiven at speed if you get the least little bit crooked. Those cars will always be a warm spot in my heart.

No, but we run it on E85.

I tossed a bunch of old car magazines out about a year ago and should have looked them over first but one of them contained an article from one of the Super Stock drivers of the day on installing a 340 into a colt using mostly factory parts.

You might be right about the front track. I remember seeing some of the later versions of prostock colts with the front wheelwells radiused, and the front wheels moved out to the outside edge of the car. I didn't like the look, and wondered why they did it, that would be a good reason.
On another note, who remembers Ray Noltemeyers rod shop colt wagon, with the GurneyWestlake headed 305? One of my very favorite cars from the old days. There is a 2013 thread about it on a-bodies. I would love to do an itty-bitty gasser style wagon today!

Colts are cars I watched and read about. I would think a roll cage is a must to stiffen everything up.At that point with "J" bars the shock towers can be eliminated and make your life better!!

That would be neat to see.

Bad mother.

A little background info:

My dad’s hero is Don Carlton. Our father raised us (four brothers) to wrench and appreciate mopars and drag racing.

I saw this for sale on forabodies maybe couple years ago, so we had to have it.

Also, here is my brother Ethans factory pro stock gremlin 1of4 made by amc for nhra pro stock competition, however it was not amc backed. Former peck and peck car out of Dayton Ohio. Not much history except: My father owned this car in the 80s, raced it and then sold it!!!!.....but......we found it three years ago in south or North Dakota and bought it back. Brought it back home. Factory lightweight...special acid dipped body and other trick **** of the day. This car is currently under construction for moly tube chassis. And will rightfully receive an amc 343 stroked to 413.

Here’s my brother Trav’s 69 Dodge Dart named the Okeana Missile...Bracket racer w 440 auto, tunnel ram. He runs this all the time it runs 10:60s-10:80s...but since civilization has shut down, he’s yet to test out his offseason improvements (my father built this one and maintains the car).

cool build

good luck & have fun

I had many short wheelbase racecars
keep the center of gravity low
do a extended chassis & lengthen the front fenders & hood a few inches
helps too
100"s or less people are afraid of, like someone else said;
I think the narrow chassis/track is more of a concern
need to slow down the streering some,
so it won't bicycle on ya', when you jerk the wheel
when (not if) you get sideways :poke:

Vintage dodge colt dealer lightup sign. Does have a crack in the front and missing a light tube but it does have the can. Local pickup only but planning a couple road trips this summer to California and the Dakotas, could meet up for some gas money

Waiting on Mancini to ship aluminum engine plate and steel mid plate for the three eight teen....

One. Step. At. A. Time.

I am the guy that built the blown pro street colt . It was the first full on build I did . Your colt is a rear steer , hits oil pan will have header problems . The oil pan for the 4 banger is in front of the crossmember . I turned the crossmember around 180 degrees and installed a mgb rack . Moved in the lower control arms and the top in 3 inches . Used a 4.5 by 4.5 wheel spacer and redrilled the rotors for 5 lug 4.5 x 5 using the stock rotors . moved the 440 back 14 inches and still had radiator clearance problems . I used smaller 1000 lbs springs on the struts up front . All this and much more back in 1986 . Its still around in the Crawford Auto Museum in Ohio . If you need and help with your colt send me a private pm and I will give you my number and we can talk . John

Wow. That looks pro. You did an amazing job. Probably the nicest colt bar none.

Thank you for the info. Unreal.

The neat thing with turbo exhaust is we can swap the exh manifolds from left to right and run the exhaust towards front of car....hopefully. Avoiding clearance issues at the steering. But...I was also hoping/figuring that with the engine pushed back, we can run a rear sump pan that clears the steering cross link, but haven’t got that far. If not, a rack would be awesome.

Thanks again for reaching out. Look forward to posting updates!

Happy Memorial Day weekend. 3 days off work to tinker and think.

-Blake

Funnykarman,

Was your colt an animal? Did you get to drive it at all? Curious what that was like w the blown 440.

Thanks,

Blake
