What to do with original 361?

Well, I have a big position to protect, I will admit to it. SP still has her original 361. I can not imagine her not having it.

When I was in college, I had a 64 Sport Fury with a 361, 4 Spd, it was a GREAT car. So for me, the original engine to any car makes it worth more. It just feels right. Again, this is to me. Best, B.

I’m completely loving the 426 in the SF. Nothing juiced up. Roadrunner cam, CH4B intake, Holley 3310-1, ‘64 manifolds, ‘75 electronic distributor, 9.25:1 needs super but no ping. It’s just a delight to drive, sounds nice but no drone, goes quite well, 3.23:1 sure grip. 0-60 in 6. 440 torsion bars, 440 ‘Cuda leafs, mustang power discs. The 361 will never go back in, nice engine but the extra 60 cubes is perfect, this actually gets better mileage (14-15mpg). Could have easily gone for more juice but not what I wanted.

Early posts had me thinking of keeping it but now I’m thinking of parting it out. Car isn’t going back to stock nor is it worth much stock. I have a couple backup 440s so the 361 isn’t even that. Nice shape engine but probably worth more in 383 parts.

When I was 17 I had a Polara 500 with a 361cu.in
305 horse
Kicked a lot of 300 horse Chevy ***.
Loved that car.

Cool car. Mine when I was 17 was a ‘67 300 convertible with the TNT 440. About the same as you describe, faster than some people expected.

Same here johnpat, When I was 16, I had one that ran so good that the Chevy guys thought it was a max wedge with a 4 barrel manifold. All it was , was a 62 Savoy 2 door , 361 , hard shift tf, sure grip, isky cam and headman headers. Wish I had that old 305 horse 361 car back today.

The original engine in my ‘64 Sport Fury was a 361. 80000 miles, re-ringed by Chrysler under warranty at 40k (1967). Ran well, 9:1 2 barrel. After swapping it for a 426-S it’s sitting in my garage looking for meaning in life. Debating what to do with it. Can’t imagine the car is worth any more with it than without, sorta don’t care.

Does anyone even want a 361? Was thinking about breaking it up. Crank is almost certainly pristine, same with rods. Maybe worth $225 and $100? 516 heads had a valve job about 10k ago, maybe worth $100? Already stole the oil pan for the Fury,

Anyway, looking for opinions. Is it pure sacrilege to dump the original engine in a car I have the window sticker for?
Keep it, or give it to me.
