I recently googled my business services for my area. I scrolled past the ads, and looked at the listings. My business wasn't even on the list. I contacted my site host, who told me google has changed things to where those who pay get listed first, and those who don't, may not be listed at all. I seriously doubt its entirely due to google and money. I suspect my host is at least, partially at fault. I need to compare with others, and see where the problem lyes.

I blame Google. Hardly a week goes by they're not calling to have me pay to get my site more visibility. But why bother, if you Google "plastics" and my city, I'm second on the list !!!

It is true that paid listings go first, but depending on your Title element (the title displayed on the browser), content etc, you should be able to "rank". I'm not a SEO professional, but I know a little bit. Could you post your site and what "keywords" are you trying to be found in the search engines?

Look up Monopoly. Google is first on the list.

Thanks Mike. I appreciate your insight. My site is aarons-air.com. i tried googling air duct cleaning dayton oh, and dryer vent cleaning dayton oh. I wasn't even on the list. Where as, for years, i usually showed on the bottom of the first page of results, organically.

Do you pay google- for anything ? And do you advertise on facebook etc at all ? Thanks.

If your business is the same as your user name here, I get almost the whole first page with that name on Google, the only thing above it is an ad for Aaron's furniture. About the same results as I get with Bing or DuckDuckGo, my usual searches. (I don't use google at all, except for this test).

Any difference with Bing? But I do see your point - if you don't use your name in the search it won't come up. It was on page two in Bing with your search string.

Like I said, I don't do SEO for a living, but I know a little bit. I wrote a short "how to" about 10 years ago to help fellow photographers (https://www.imagesinthebackcountry.com/blog/2012/11/23/seo-for-the-photographer/). Basics are the same be it photography, dog groomer or air duct cleaning.

Your Title element should be about 70 characters or less, and the most important keywords should be first. Currently you have 'Aaron's Air - Air Duct Cleaning | Dryer Vent Cleaning | Duct Sealing Services Dayton, OH'. I would use something like 'Air Duct Cleaning Sealing Services Dayton OH' so your not duplicating your keywords. Nothing really wrong with duplicating, but not needed (remember that 70 character).

Your home page title looks to be this: 'Experienced Air Duct and Dryer Vent Cleaning in Dayton, Ohio'. Code-wise, it's wrapped in a <h3>, which should be a <h1>. Each page should have ONE <h1> tag. It tells the search engines that <h1> is the most important thing on that page. Like a newspaper. You can change the physical font-size of the <h1> using CSS.

I did a search using Duck Duck Go and 'air duct cleaning dayton oh' was on the bottom of the first page and 'dryer vent cleaning dayton oh' was #3. Since I'm not local to you, it's probably going to be different for you.

Your quite welcome. Also look into the meta description section on my "how to". I might want to re-write your current description. I do know some SEO-people don't use it. They let Google (or what ever search engine) pick the words to display.

Mike may i ask, judging by what you've seen with my site, and its flaws, do you think i'm working with a competent host? Or should i consider shopping ?

Sorry - but I have to ask. How much to clean a dryer vent when the pipe is the length of the garage and sheet metal piping?

Nothing wrong with your host. You just need somebody to make some changes to your website.

The companies that do what i call a poor job of cleaning use air to blow one out. Locally, they're usually around $100. Running a brush through one is more work, more expensive, but the results are much better.

Remember though, nobody is going to search your business name if your looking for a service.

I created mine (through the Weebly Drag & Drop feature) on Dot5hosting.com in 2008 and have been happy with my choice. No computer guru, I've learned a lot since but am still far from my "ideal" website.

What brings more customers are the tags on my online images and word of mouth rather than internet surfers who stumble on it by accident. After 13+ years PSC has a pretty wide range on search engines, but type "mopar powder coat" in your browser and I bet my shop is on the first page below the Sponsored Ads and has a huge number of images. That's what tags on your photos will do.

Metatags are the search terms people use to find what they're looking for. Great meta tags will come from your provider's data about your website performance. A list buried in it shows what people chose for search terms and actually found YOUR site.

Good ones also come from people who don't know much about your industry but know they need you. "Sweep," "dust," "clean," "vacuum" "brush" and even "suck," when combined with "vent," "pipe," "duct" (and "duck" because people can't spell) added to your metatags on every website page will bring you real customers.

There is much to learn. Do it now or you'll be so busy you won't have time later. :D
