As I noted in another post my 1968 vintage SG 741 is leaking around the pinion bearing. I went ahead and pulled the nut and flange. The flange surface has a mark from the seal but no groove or wear pattern. My mistake was I didn't look at the tech help before I removed the nut/flange so don't know where the original position or turns of the nut. What is my procedure now when I go to put it back together? Is there a preferred seal for this?
Thanks, Wes

Clean the yoke shaft surface, install the new seal, replace yoke and tighten it back up, to I believe it's 240 ft-lbs, but don't quote me on it. No crush sleeve on a 741, so an easy one to do.

Cass told me that 240 ft lbs has to be a mistake in the FSM. The size of the thread/shaft would dictate 90 to 120 ft pounds. He uses a impact lol :D

(My bad)

That's a relief. I had visions of dial indicators and torque multipliers dancing in my head.

John, I think you mean foot/pounds.
FOOT lbs KK, not inches... it's a big "bolt".

WTF !

My friend who ran a one man rear end shop used a six foot bar to hold the pinion flange, and the biggest, nastiest impact he could buy, to get some of the rears apart that he worked on .

Come on, what's not to like about crush sleeves?

Oh, yeah, nothing.

National/ Federal Mogul 8515N be ok? Or should I use something else?

I would just order one from Dr. Diff. His shipping and cost are comparable to others if not better. The seals that you buy from the local parts houses and catalog sites might be the leather ones. They also could have just one land in their seals and not two. Ask me how I know. Cass has always sent me the good double land seals. Just make sure you select the one for the 741 case.

Looking through my notes I might have torqued my pinion nut to 150 ft lbs. I did the 240 ft lbs once and broke my torque wrench!

It's suppose to be a "rolling" torque on the nut. This seats the roller bearings before the full torque is applied. Once you get to 75 to 80 lbs they will be seated and then you can hold the yoke firm and finish the torque.

One more thing...

Get a bottle of liquid Teflon for the splins. The rear lube can wick up through the splines and cause a little weeping.

It's an option but I use a little smear of Indian Head where the seal seats. Not on the rubber but on the outside. This seal is showing grease on the rubber.

Been there, done that!

Whenever I replace that type of seal, with spring around the rubber, I fill the area around the spring with grease. That will prevent the spring from popping off when tapping the seal in.
