I just put a 440 i rebuild in my 67 gtx clone and when i went to crank it ran for 30 seconds then fire came out of breath. help needed.

Im not a mechanic but really have worked hard on this thing hope its just timing issue

also comes out of egr on intake that i havent covered with block off thanks for all replies

Did it crank very hard and slow but fire right to life when it caught?
no i had to hold gas pedal down so i dont think im getting enough fuel but im also blowing fire balls so i dont know what to do and dont have anyone to really help me out and im not sxperienced at this stuff

sounds like a massive vacuum leak coupled with wacky timing. are you advancing or retarding the timing, do you have enough fuel? flooding the engine? 180* out ?

If flames are coming out breather that is bad. If flames came out carb yes timing. Check your dip stick to see if it's over full and does it smell like gas?

ive been rotating distributor trying to nail it in but i also have to hold gas pedal down to get it started

pull the number one plug , bring to btdc on the balancer, and check that the piston is all the way up. pop distributor cap , make sure you have the #1 wire at the terminal the rotor tip is at. complete firing order 18436572 counterclockwise . fuel , not too much , don't flood it. check that every orifice on the carb and intake are blocked off. you are going to turn the distributor counterclockwise to advance it. i hope you are prepared to run that thing at 2500 to 3000 rpm for a good 30 minutes to break the cam in

STOP pumping that gas pedal. Go have 10 beers and come back tomorrow. Then follow the advice above on TDC and distributor position. Then give it another go, with a squirt bottle of gas to see if it runs and then idles...

yeah its not good lol if its overfull or smells like gas what do you suggest

Agree on checking the TDC. But then it is clockwise to advance, counterclockwise to retard.

Is this a complete rebuild? Cam and lifters? If so, you better stop and really make sure you are ready to roll.

Does it run before it backfires?? If not make sure the distributor is not 180* out which would be verified on TDC with the cap off pointed at #1 cylinder.
