I have a fresh build, with a new alternator, and aluminum pulleys. I bought the pulley set used, but the alternator pulley had never been pressed on. I had a local shop press the alternator pulley on for me. This morning, while looking for a power steering leak, i fired the engine for about a minute, and shut it off. When i looked back under the hood, i saw my alternator belt hanging loose. I found my pulley, a few minutes later, out in the yard, by the driveway. Is this common, for pressed on aftermarket pulleys ? Replace the pulley, or just try pressing it on again ? I think its March brand.

How bad is the shaft or the pulley hole. Is it wobbled out.

No. The pulley hole, and alternator shaft both, have markings, from being pressed on. But no real signs of wobble, or wear.

sure looks like there's not enough shaft sticking out to really secure it, like it's been sliced off or something. seems to me if it has already came off it will just keep coming off unless there is a set screw that can be tightened.

Just spitballin' here,,,,measure the alternator OD of the shaft and the ID of the pully. There should be a few thou of "crush" to hold the pully on.

You're right- thanks. I just measured the surface area on the pulley. Its 3/4 deep. And the scratch marks are about 3/8.
I think i should of bought a double pulley shaft alternator, instead of a single. And then had the pulley swapped.

Did the "local shop" disassemble the alternator to press on the pulley? That's the only way pressing can be done correctly. Some who want to save time will just heat the pulley and push it on but it might not seat all the way.

I am uncertain. Its an older man, that rebuilds starters etc. He has a shop called, The electric garage. I had him do the same thing, years ago, when building a cuda. Never had a problem then, but cant remember if it was a double pulley shaft, or not. I'll find out, how he does it, next round.

through that junk away. get the right parts and use them. you know the ones you that you had that never failed.
