It's a similar game except there are more balls with the following points;

15 x Red = 1 point
1 x yellow = 2 points
1 x green = 3 points
1 x brown = 4 points
1 x blue = 5 points
1 x pink = 6 points
1 x black = 7 points

The idea is to pot one red, then pot any other colour, then another red, then a colour...and so on until there are no reds remaining. The coloured balls are re-spotted on their correct location after being sunk each time, therefore allowing it to be potted again. This happens until all the reds are gone, and then the coloured balls must be sunk in sequential order according to their points value - from yellow through to the black.

The highest 'break' possible is 147, which is seldom achieved - involves sinking a black each time a red is potted, then colours all in correct order. Many Professionals have done this maximum break on TV - probably the most famous is Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins - named after his 'devil-may-care' attitude and extreme accuracy. Scoring a 147 break in a tournament has a prize attached much akin to a golfer getting a hole-in-one.

Now I'm really confused. Why does he keep taking the ball out of the pocket and placing it on the table? I thought the object was to sink the red balls first, then the money balls.
 
The idea is to sink a red ball, and if you do, you then are allowed to shoot and hopefully sink a "coloured" ball. As Kiwi stated in his breakdown of points per ball, the black ball holds the highest point value. So if you can, you'd always want to sink the black after sinking a red. If you successfully sink a coloured ball, it immediately comes back on the table. The reds always stay down if sunk. Then after ALL the reds have been sunk, the coloured balls are sunk and stay down. They must be sunk in order of lowest point value to highest. Hope this makes sense.

Sinking a red ball gives the opportunity to sink a coloured ball, to gain extra points. Then you sink another red to have a crack at another coloured ball...and so on until you miss the shot.

Another part of the game is to make it impossible for your opponent to have a clear shot at a ball - thus the name 'snooker'. By snookering your opponent, if he misses the intended target (as in ouches another ball first OR clean miss) you score points according to what he should have hit...
Misses a red, yellow, green or brown = 4 points,
Miss blue = 5 points
Miss pink = 6 points
Miss black = 7 points

Of course these are just the basics of the rules...there are many more.

The American pool players I know do use the term "snooker" if you're playing a defensive shot to get another ball between the cue and your opponent's target ball, or if that happens naturally.
