Open Road Racing anyone?

I see a lot of 1/4 milers on here but I'm wondering if we have any Open Road racers in the group. I'd be interested in hearing what you're running and how you have it set up. I'm building a B body for long distance/high speed and looking for any tips or tricks. I'm still gathering parts and prepping the body at this point. So what do you recommend?

I've tried it. But it was a turbo Neon. Lots of fun. The big thing is heat

about the Silver State 50 & 100 races, or races like them
what to do & what some have done

cooling system running at hi RPM
especially for extended periods of time is critical
trans & gearing to suit what you want & speeds/rpm you want at WOT
wider wheels & sticky tires
shocks are a big deal, so are anti-sway bars
suspension changes & lowering/stance
(good aftermarket parts or modified org. parts)
low center of gravity, less mass
less weight where ever possible (especially up high)
tying the chassis together/subframe connectors
spoiler outback & splitter/spoiler upfront
keep air from going under the car
channeling all the frontal air into the radiator
making the moldings & everything as slick as possible
lighten the car as much as possible (HP to weight ratios)
stiffen the car as much as possible
adding a cage & all the other safety equipment

the better you can make the car cut thru the air, the better
cool air going thru the radiator & induction
the less HP it will use to go specific speed
better have a bulletproof bottom end (short block)
still cool it efficiently getting rid of underhood heat
& still, be able to keep it down on the ground/stuck

& balls the size of an elephant
to go into turns open roads @150mph+

I guess you better add "extra length 5-point harness crotch strap" to the list.

I've been reading a lot of books including B-body Performance Upgrades by Andy Finkbeiner. He has a ton of info in his book.
 
"house of muscle ep3" would be a good start to your education!
trepanier is one of, if not the best!

I haven't had much shop time lately, but I do have a couple weeks off this month that I hope to progress this project. I'm just trying to build it right the first time, so I don't have to go backwards. I'll try to get some photos posted soon.
#41, Mike, above introduced me to this sport as it seems to be a well kept secret. Mike has a really nice car and some great stories about this racing.

I'd like to try with my 10 Challenger RT, then my 01 Viper and then move onto my 73 Cuda (which I built with road racing in mind) and my 70 Challenger. Depending on how the 71 Charger comes out, I would try it with that too.

Id love to road race or even just auto X but never really go after it but I will some day. I would like auto X because it isn't as hard on the car plus takes less resources. I'd like to try with my 10 Challenger RT, then my 01 Viper and then move onto my 73 Cuda (which I built with road racing in mind) and my 70 Challenger. Depending on how the 71 Charger comes out, I would try it with that too.
Your 10 Challenger and 01 Viper are perfect for this type of racing. There are a few Challengers that run them. In the touring class, you don't need to add much to the cars other than a fire extinquisher and good tires. It just depends on how fast you want to go.

Thanks. I have researched it a number of times but just never get off my butt and go and do it. I did an auto X event at the MATS one year with a 66 Barracuda Lemons car, made 2 runs and loved it. I don't really have any car "buddies" around here so I am pretty much an island unto myself most of the time so I spent most of my time building cars verses driving them. I built this car with road racing (auto X) in mind, has a 4 link rear, big T bars, full chassis bracing, etc.

I'm building a car too, so I know what you mean. but you DO need to take them out and run 'em.
 
Most first timer runs are limited to basic good built street cars. I would not be afraid to run any of my basic stock mopars the first time.

Yep down in Yelm near Ft Lewis/Olympia. I see that much of the auto x stuff is more up north of me, past Seattle. I need to just go and watch one and ease into it. I know if I go I will get in to it, problem is that takes from building them... LOL

Where are you open road racing?

Yes I know I need to drive them, its just a timing thing not to mention an insurance thing if I am actually going to take them anywhere other than the road out front.

Like I said, I would start off with my 10 Challenger and then go from there.
