I saw the Brewers add for 4 speed conversions id like to convert my 62 dart to 4 speed has anyone doe it using the Brewers set up and is the price worth it or the effort to find it piece by piece

Looking for the parts can take awhile. The best way would be the obvious....Find a wrecked 4 speed car and pillage all the needed parts.

I got mine from Passon. Kern is right, if you can find a four speed wreck it’s a great way to go because you know everything is compatible. Those wrecks are getting harder to find, though. Where I live they are non existent. The Passon stuff is nice, everything is either new or rebuilt to new.

I paid $5978 for the Tremec 5 speed kit for my Charger, $350 of that was just for the Pistol Grip shift lever. What is the going rate for the 4 speed setup?

I converted my '68 Coronet to 4 speed. I pieced it together but if I had to do it again I would get a kit from Brewer's or Passon. I bought a rebuilt 23-spline unit and bell housing from Passon at Carlisle so I didn't have to pay to ship it. Got some things on here/Moparts but most everything else I bought from Brewer's probably because their website is easier to navigate. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from either vendor though, both shops almost always have what I need in stock and are very good on the phone.

Only caveat I will add is that I went with an American Powertain hydraulic throwout bearing because I didn't want to deal with welding the z-bar bracket on the frame or all the linkage. Worked out great, happy with it.

The other option is to go with the American Powertrain hydraulic throwout bearing and master cylinder. It took some minor custom fabrication but I love it. If you have older knees, they will thank you after a single session of sitting in traffic.

Baaab!. Maybe check with Aaron to see if he can get ahold of that guy who lives on the Pechanga res. He had quite a bit of old b-body stuff. I scored some front bumpers from him to cut and modify for my 65. One of them also had a license frame from the old dealer that was in Fallbrook when I was a kid.

To answer your question, is it worth the price?

Well, that depends on you and your time frame. If you’re willing to wait as long as it takes (a month, a year, 3 years, who knows how long) to round up a bunch of used up and clapped out components, recondition them, and hope that the seller gave you the right stuff to begin with- So if this sounds like fun to you - No it’s not worth it.

However, in my opinion and after having done several conversions, I think it’s WELL worth it to have a one stop shop of highly knowledgeable four speed transmission people (Wayne from Brewers) supply you with the CORRECT parts the First time in Brand New condition to make you project go seamlessly. So for me and if this sounds better to you -Yes it’s worth it.

At the end of the day you may save some money searching high and low for individual parts, but for me if you factor in the time, aggravation, and cost of refurbing those used parts it’s not worth it. Everything will be new, and provide you years of trouble free service. Good luck!

I am in the middle of my conversion ( 70 B-body ) and went with an overdrive 4 speed and conversion from Passon. All the parts are there, every bolt and screw. Made it a breeze to convert. My car is still on the rotisserie but the conversion is complete. They even have the column parts to convert it from column shift to floor shift.
Great kit.
I have pix on google drive if I could figure out how to post them... hah

DJV, have not seen you on the forums for a long time, good to see you posting again.

Interested in hearing about the 4 speed overdrive, I am looking into one of those units to go behind a 470".

I love having a 4 speed in my car, soooooo much more fun than an automatic. You're more engaged in the drive and have more control over the car. Before the conversion my Coronet was a column shift with a bench seat and driving was not unlike falling asleep on a vinyl couch.

Thanks - It's been quite awhile!
so long in fact I can't figure out how to post pictures! hah... ( I'm guessing I cant post links from google photos like I used to from photobucket)

I had a buddy that put a passon 4 speed OD in his 440 challenger. He loved it. The way i think of it is that the torque these big blocks make you dont need a close ratio gearing like a newer motor requires. It should be great for something like I am building to drive on the highway. ( 493")

If you want to post a link to your Google pic page, go to the advanced reply window. Click the chain icon on top, it will open a window which asks for a URL to link to. Copy the Google page link, paste it into the field and it will appear in your reply. If you want to insert individual images instead of the general link, you click the image icon at the top next to the smiley button and it will take you through the same procedure. Or, you can use the attachment manager (upload photos button at the bottom of the advanced reply window) if you have the images on your local drive.

I do a bunch of highway driving myself. Along with the 470" there's a 4.10 Dana waiting to go behind it, the OD will be the best of both worlds.

one thing i need to check is will any b body bell housing work with a 62 or do i need that year only im also leaning on brewers as they have a package deal
