In the Alpha Centauri system, only 4.7 Light Years away. Earth sized. This is a real time photo of that neighborhood of a three star system. Confirmation is forthcoming. If confirmed it's a great candidate for colonization.

Maybe they will get light sail technology figured out, and how to apply it to larger than postage stamp size objects. Travel then would be possible for a round trip in about 24 years I think they projected.
Alpha Centauri is our closest star and it still takes 4.7 years for light to travel, one way, to earth at 186,000 miles per second. If we are to ever explore the universe we’ll have to figure out how to travel faster, much much faster than light to go anywhere. Think about our next closest galaxy, Andromeda, at 2.5 million light years away. So even traveling at twice the speed of light it would take over a million years to get there.

I am one of those that believe the speed of light is "the limit".
I believe we will someday approach but not exceed that speed.
Too many weird things happen (such as time distortion allowing you to arrive before you leave) when you exceed that speed.

Theoretically, it SHOULD be possible to warp space + time in your location and bring your destination closer. Like instead of flying straight too a location you would instead fold S/T into a "U" shape and hop across between the tops of the U. Thereby making a long journey onto a very short one. Or so Einstein said,..

We just need to travel at FTL (Faster than light) speed....they did it on Stargate Universe.
Once we get that 9th chevron to lock we can send the ship in advance, and rendezvous at one of many stops along the way.
Solar sails will be the next thing...
This is an easy one. Andromeda is scheduled to collide with the Milky Way. All we have to do is wait for it to come to us!
I want the energy source that can warp space-time like that.
