This is one of the yards I work with. A time capsule if you will. A lot of the videos I’ve made came from this yard. Only one B body car was in this one & it was picked over good. I got the body side moulding from it. The owner was forced to crush. He didn’t want to & we did all we could to sell cars & parts. Scotty dropped prices to the bone. Practically giving stuff away yet few, very few came by. I bought a lot from him in recent months including a Fury wagon. Anyway no need to cry now. It’s done. This is a portion of the video I took.
Junkyard crushout & closing up

Sad to see - to think of how many desirable cars were crushed over the decades, or those that became desirable after they were figured as crushers. The yards with old cars are getting more scarce.

They are indeed. I only know of a few left & I have a gut feeling a couple of them won’t be here in 5 years

Used to have a lot of fun wandering through the old bone yards for some item I needed then coming out with several more I thought would be of use. What I didn't think about back when was getting stuff that would be real popular items to sell off, well I bought a few items; but not near as often as I could have. There's still a (very) few yards that just let ya go free to search the yard and pull the parts yourself you're looking for. The traipsing through the mud, bending branches to reach a car, opening a hood that hasn't been lifted in years, and climbing into the wreck through the windows. LOL. Getting to be a lost 'art'. Glad I can still do it at my age, just a tad more carefully!

I'm old enough that I remember going to junk yards with a satchel of tools and wandering around looking for parts and site seeing. There was a particular one the Washington NJ called Kobers, was a bit of a drive but a great place to crawl around. Photographers could have spent all day taking pictures for car calendars of trees growing through cars. Long before anyone thought of suing an owner if you got hurt on his property. I miss those times.

I went there about 40 years ago, took my two year old son carried him on my shoulders all day
Incredible place, so many fifties cars. Place was huge, seemed like you could walk around for hours What happened to that place?

I remember when Hilliards crushed out, but they wouldn’t sell whole cars for some reason. A lot of good old iron went to the shredder. 3500 cars there, and about 500 trucks. They let Irv keep the house and the cars up under the lean to, which didn’t amount to anything. I believe he was 92 when they crushed out, and I heard $750k went to the family, but he was too old to enjoy any of it!

I have no idea if Kobers is still in existence, it was a lot of acreage for sure. There was that one section that was completely overgrown with all the really old cars and trucks. Only car guys could appreciate it, magical place.
