1971 Charger dash reassembly

I'm working on reassembling my '71 Charger's dash but I didn't take it apart. So, I will have a few questions as I go along. First question is do I have the ash tray right?

Second question is do the defroster ducts screw directly into the steel dash frame or are there some u-nuts I don't have?

While I've yet to get a response on my first two questions, I'm going to ask a third. Does this bracket for the ductwork go inside the dash frame as I've assembled it or does it go under? Dash frame in the photo is upside down.

I'm about right where you are in my 71 project. Just finishing up going through the harness a 3rd time.... , that and beginning to reassemble the heater box. I'll take some pics this weekend when I pull this stuff out and post any usable pics and hopefully get you (us!) somewhere with it. I took this stuff off 15yrs ago so I have some figuring myself.

the vents screw directly to the frame with sheet metal screws. The circled screws in attached photo hold the speaker/vent cover.

goes outside. The small bracket/tab is not threaded so the screw threads into the frame and clamps the bracket down. Those threaded holes also hold the vent cables.

Here are some more photos of my setup if you need a reference. My dash was non AC but I added the dash vents to use with a Vintage air system. I have original ducts but will probably use the Vintage hose instead.

These photos are very helpful. I realize that the last shop that had my car removed and lost the wiring loom trough. So, I just ordered one off of Ebay. Can you show where the wiring trough attaches to the dash frame?

I obtained one off of Ebay and put it in. Now that I know where the main loom goes, I can shorten the feeds to the gauges.

Regarding your Vintage AC system, did you find an electronic AC control that fits your non-AC dash? The Vintage web site only lists "universal" kits for the 1971 charger. I've been looking at doing one of these kits. Called them on the phone and they could not tell me which control fits a 71 charger dash.

In your first photo, what's the screw in the lower right of the photo hold? I have a u-clip there but no idea why.

It's just a ground. The wire is about 6 inches long and goes into the factory harness. The last pic shows this wire with dash in the car.

Regarding your Vintage AC system, did you find an electronic AC control that fits your non-AC dash? The Vintage web site only lists "universal" kits for the 1971 charger. I've been looking at doing one of these kits. Called them on the phone and they could not tell me which control fits a 71 charger dash.

My controls and evap parts are still on order. So don't know how the control will fit. I ordered the 3 knob panel that was recommended on this site and sorry I don't remember who but will try to find more info and pics tomorrow.

The Vintage panel control part number: 491223-RUA. The evap box, Vintage lists as universal is the Gen IV and is the same box used on 70 to 74 E bodies. They recommend the universal mounting bracket but I think the E body bracket will work.
