I picked this caterpillar off one of my shrubs this afternoon. Something must have laid eggs on it. I put it out of it's misery.

Wasps lay eggs in the caterpillar and then the larvae hatches and feeds on the non essential organs of the caterpillar. So says google.

I just found out this is the tobacco horn worm. Tomato horn worm has v-shaped longitudinal stripes.
