We are having a rash of car break ins in Upstate NY. Ring door bell cams are catching cars pulling up to residential area’s with individuals checking for open doors.

Does the key fob transmit a signal even if you’re not pushing one of the buttons? I’m thinking about buying a new truck, but if they’re that easy to steal, I may have to keep my old one.

The keyfob is constantly looking for the vehicle. The only way to stop it is either put it in a metal box
or take out the battery. All the cops know this as do the car dealers! Bad design.

Didn't they use something like that to steal garage opener codes? Don't garage openers have rolling codes, well cars are next. Why wasn't that done to start with.

They should have a kill switch some where on the out side. Its a inconvenience , but it could work .

I keep my hellcat in a garage with 2500 ft pound bear trap near driver door if i open side door it drags away safely. But break open garage door and watch the fun. If they break in no loss won’t call the cops, just mop up the mess a little bleach and back to sleep i go.

That's a key (pardon the pun), situational awareness. Local mall recently had a rash of car thefts despite roving patrols. Nephew works mall security. Anyway, they got them on cameras and eventually caught them. Their MO...they would station a lookout in the parking garage, sometimes in a vehicle. He would watch for vehicles they were interested in (keyless fob) and ID the driver to his buddies who would then shadow the driver in the mall to "signal boost" the fob. They would then use the device to open the vehicle/drive away. Some folks, including me, now use a Faraday bag to store the keyless fob, especially around malls and other target rich environments.

Although this sucks; I, being basically a poor bastard, am pretty much immune, (to a certain extent) from this particular scam. I don't own anything that doesn't need a key to unlock the steering wheel. On top of which I hate all this electronic bullshit they put in vehicles today anyway. There are enough problems with PCM's and BCM's to make me want to power puke! I would rather blow my money on older more (reliable) and less sophisticated stuff. As a public service, I also advise people to NEVER leave your registration & insurance card in the glove box. If someone steals your car & gets pulled over they just say they borrowed it from you as they know your name from your credentials and your address! (unless it's a PO box.) If it is your actual address, they also now know that you are quite possibly not home as they are in your car. They just drive your car over there and rob your house too. Any neighbors, recognizing your car, wouldn't pay much attention!
Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life down here any longer! Life was much simpler and better 40 years ago!

Really burns me that the auto manufactures and govt keep shoving all this new technology down our throats. My current truck has no key and no column mounted shifter handle. And the other huge complaint I have is not being able to back up with the door open. I do a lot of backing up to loading docks and then need to drop the tailgate to slide heavy things in. Just can't judge this distance accurately with the camera.

99% of the time I use the button on the door to lock the car.
Usually I only use the remote if I'm well away from the car and can't remember if I locked it.

I do use the remote to unlock it, though.
They'd at least have to follow me to my next destination or know where I live.
