5.7 air cleaner options

So I am currently pondering what air cleaner system/type I will use on my 5.7 going into my 71 Charger. I have a Mopar CAI on my 2010 Challenger RT which is ok but to be honest I'd rather not run something like that on the Charger. I am thinking of several options;

1. Running the inlet tube down low and putting a filter there. Problem is that here in WA state that could mean a lot of water and crap entering there.

2. Just putting the filter right on the throttle body - not a bad idea if I can fit it in and it doesn't look like crap.

3. Making some type of top mounted filter system - problem here is that the TB comes straight out the front so the inlet part would have to make a pretty severe turn to get to it. I guess i could swap in a trunk intake but I think that requires a new timing chain cover (anyone confirm/deny?).

Just thinking it through and thought I would put it out there. If you have pics, please post some.

Uh thanks but the throttle body is located in the front the engine... going to the cowl or inside the car is behind the engine unless I flipped the intake backwards which I am not inclined to do.

Did I misunderstand your intent or comments? I see your aviator so I know you are familiar with the 5.7 layout, perhaps I just didn't grasp the concept you were offering.
 
My only thing is keep the intake air temp as low as possible, when I see a air filter right behind the radiator I scratch my head and wonder. I do often wonder about an insulated air intake tube. A nice fresh air set up to keep temps down is my only recommendation .
 
I was referring to old cold air. Grabbing low pressure from the cowl, it works, it works very well. Also, running the tubing through the the firewall will always get clean coldish air.

Full shroud and dual fans. Mine is about as cool as the air can get from under the hood. Every other place is to full or would require restrictive plumbing.
 
Gotcha and I agree but I don't want to open up the firewall to make this work. I am going to be running an Air Grabber door so that should help. I am just trying to come up with something other than the normal CAI approach.
 
I used an aftermarket cold air intake but it requires a trunk mounted battery. Maybe you have more room on the passenger side.

My battery will be in the trunk as well so that isn't an issue. That looks basically the same as what i have on my 2010 Challenger. Its one option for sure.

Mine is similar to that.
My donor car came with the K+N cold air intake already installed, so I decided to keep it.
I modified it slightly by cutting about a 2" section out of the pipe where it attaches to the filter. This gave me sufficient clearance to the inner fender (so it would not touch/rub).

It's a bit crowded under the hood for to many options.

Where did you put your air temp sensor?
There is just enough room between the air cleaner and the throttle body in that stainless connector between the two. It is hidden on the right side bottom.
