Obscure question for the old guys. Remember the tiger in the tank promotion?

This must have been mid to late 60's. Some gas company was advertising putting a Tiger In The Tank. They even went so far as to have little tiger tails you could put around your gas cap so you had the tiger tail sticking out of your car. Okay, I clearly remember that.

But there was something else related to that. I think it was a couple of plastic horseshoes, maybe about 6" tall you put in your rear windshield. It's a vivid memory for me and here's why.

My dad owned a crude oil marketing company. Someone was stealing gasoline from the yard at night. My dad, my cousin, and I went out one night and found a car with their lights off pulled in next to the tuck yard. Dad turned his lights off and crept in right behind them. After about 30 seconds they realized they didn't know who was behind them and they took off. The chase was on. We got their tag number but I especially remember they had those advertising horseshoes in the rear window. My cousin knew who they were, warned them and it never happened again.

Do you remember these? I was probably 12 years old at the time.

Esso or Exxon now.

My Dad used to hit the Sunoco and ask for “High Test”in his ‘68 Satellite. Damn that 260 smelled good!:D

Oh yeah. Don’t forget the (Atlantic?) red ball service antennae ball.

I found them.
Gulf No Nox for the Extra kick.

ESSO was put a tiger in your tank.
GULF had the NO NOX horseshoes.
Both were 60's advertising for Hi-test gasolines, and there were a lot of others.
Union 76 antenna balls?

I remember Exxon with the tiger tail, but the horse shoes, no.

Essò Oil Company had the Tiger Tails
Gulf had the Horseshoes
I also remember free dishes with fill up
(California), Texaco fire chief hat and die-cast
tanker trucks, S&H green, and Blue Chip stamps.
Regular gas at around that time was .25 cents
a gallon and you could find cut rate at an
independent brand station for .18 cents.

Didn't Pontiac get the GTO tied in with the Esso tiger thing in the mid 60's? I remember seeing ads in old magazines for the GeeTeeOhh Tiger, and they had like 66 or 67 GTOs with the tiger tails.

Put a tiger in the tank.. Boy was I wrong I dumped a box of frosted flakes into my gas tank.. DAMN YOU TONY THE TIGER.. Just kidding.

I remember the tiger in your tank commercials.....they actually go back to 59. Also remember the extra kick ads but don't remember the horse shoes.

"As the subregular and middle grades of gas came to market in 1962, the average octanes of gasolines in the U.S. now stood at 93 for regular, 99 for premium and 102 for the few super-premiums still left on the market. Those numbers would increase only slightly in the next few years to around 94 octane for regular, and 100 for premium by 1967." From another forum.
