8 3/4 housing?

I see that some 8 3/4 rears are painted a Gray. I don't remember this back in the 60's & 70's. Am I just old and can't remember?

They should be black, and the center chunk was left as cast.

Mine shown above is blasted and cleared. The bumper plate is coated with RPM.
