Can a Saginaw ( canned ham ) PS pump be used on an early 318 with the cast iron water pump ( pre 1970), Since the pully alignment is not the same as the later LA engines. What brackets would be needed ? just looking for some information.

Don't have any input as for available brackets, but if you have any fabrication skills you can make what you need. ruffcut

Not sure of your reference to a Saginaw "canned ham" pump. Most of the early Saginaw pumps had an oval filler neck and a round pump oil resivoire. Later Saginaw pumps had a semi rectangular elongated filler neck and a semi round oil resivoire.....perhaps these are what you are referring to....?? Not.sure of the mounting boss locations or drive sheave diameter and off set in regard to mounting bosses or if there is a difference between the two designs.

We have one that is still bolted to a 67 318 la motor, and I believe it
is complete, w/brackets. It is on a motor that I don't know much about.
This motor came stock w/a cast iron water pump, and I am pretty sure
it is just a core unit. Just let us know if you may be interested.

You referred to "an early 318 with a cast iron water pump".....do mean a poly head 318.....prior to 1967? 1967 was the first year of the LA 318...totally different in appearance than the poly head design....BTW, whst year is your vehicle? Your old pump may be a Federal pump.....the high pressure connection is on the front of the pump..... Why not just rebuild or overhaul uour old pump.....then everything fits and functions as origional.

My car is a 62 Fury , with a 318 Poly. Right now I do not have power steering at all (have manual steering) looking for information on what parts I need to gather. Read that the Mopar/ GM style Saginaw PS pump was a better unit, that the older style PS pumps. I also thought that the cast iron water pumps were used up to 1969 on small blocks ( could be wrong about that.)

I believe the '62 Fury 318 used a Federal or TRW pump with a special mounting bracket that allowed the pump to pivot clockwise to tighten the drive belt to prevent slippage when doing slow turning maneuvering such as parking. iMO, you'd be better off using an origional pump and mounting bracket. BTW, you'll need the crankshaft sheave that accomodate the belt. You'll also need the power steering gear box and mounting bolts, the pitman arm connecting the steering box to the center link, appropriate high and low pressure hoses, and the steering shaft to steering box coupler. Do you have a Factory Service Manual for your vehicle....an invaluable resource....so you can see how everything fits together. Just thinking out loud.....others will have additional insight and suggestions.... suggest you also inquire to the For C Bodies Only (FCBO) forum as C bodies are significantly different than B bodies.

Thanks for the information guys. And for those that don't know it , the 1962-1964 Plymouth Fury is a "B" body. ( not a "C" body ) In 1965 The Fury was put onto the larger platform and then became a " C"body.

I have a 63 Polara 4dr sedan with a factory poly 318 in it, and w/power
steering. I believe all the P/Steering components are still present. If
interested, just let us know.
