Hello and good day to all of us! So i have (I believe) is a hemi trans, but when looking at the numbers i am confused as to what i see, so i ask for your opinion. I am hard pressed to tell if this is a "6" or an "o" over stamped or used as a "spacer/correction".

Since I'm not a numbers guy, just pull the front pump and see if it has the wide front drum. That tells the story, not the number stamping.

Why do you think this is a hemi trans? As said it’s a 1970 383-2bbl case. A 383-2bbl trans doesn’t have the hemi drums and other parts.

You can remove the pan to see if the drum is in there. But it could have been removed at anytime.

Hello all, I do thank you for all your replies and insights and agree that it is a 383 2bbl trans (an acquaintance of my local had that Hemi idea) and that is why I put it out there. I have learned in life that you don't get if you don't ask. Now I can move forward...Thanks for the relief!...Lol. Till next time

Your 383 2bbl 727 is a fine base. It all depends on what your application is. I expect it has the standard 4 disc front drum and the 3 pinion/4 pinion planetary with a 3.2 front lever. For a high HP I would change a few things, but it is fine.

It doesn’t come with any of those things. It came from Chrysler with a 3 disc front drum, both 3 pinion planetaries and a 2.9 lever. Basically a 318 trans with a BB case.

Gee not like my OEM 383 2 bbl 727 which is what I learned how to rebuild 727's. Again I don't know numbers. I just know what the parts are inside when I see them.

If by the numbers this transmission will not have what a Hemi was built with.

Again I have no idea what the numbers mean. I know what my OEM '70 383 2bbl 727 had as internal parts. I also know what an OEM Hemi 727 has for internal parts. I've have them. I've have had most every OEM 727 low perf & hi perf version available. There are so many I can't count. As I said I never looked at the stamping number, just what is the parts inside. The 3 disc front drum started in '73-74 on the low perf 727's as far as I recall.

Then you will agree the Hemi is going to have a host of different performance parts and mods compared to this transmission or what yours would of had from the factory..

An OEM Hemi 727 had lots of different parts. The front pump was machined to accept the wide front drum, front band was wider, 5 clutch discs in the wide drum, used a 5.0 band lever, one long soft spring in the front servo, both front and rear planetary were 4 pinion, governor was a high upshift. It was a whole different combination of parts than a low perf 727.

Nobody uses factory Hemi stuff to race. 3 pin planets will hold up to way more the the planet splines themselves. The drum is heavy. You can buy 4 plate drums pretty cheap. They will take 5 thin plates. But seldom would that be required. Levers of any factory ratio are easy to get as well. So unless you're looking for a matching # resto i wouldn't bother. Any core will work. 1971 and newer Non lock-up would be preferred to start with.

I agree, I haven't used the Hemi drum since 1975. 5 discs in the standard 4 disc drum was easy enough. I still believe in the 4 pinion, but you may know than me. Again I never cared about numbers, just what's inside.

There are only two planetary failures I've ever seen. Stripped splines on the front planet. And needle bearing failure on a planet pin. Never seen a gear tooth failure.

I'm sure you have a good point. Stripped splines seems like the most likely failure. I think the 4 pinion was intended to avoid the bearing failure. Can't picture a gear failure. But I've had enough 4 pinions available to use them in my 727's.
