WTB Dana 60 Left/Drivers Side 23 Spline Axle Shaft for a ‘68 B-Body Power Lock.
Looking for a nice complete takeout so I can just bolt in the entire assembly- bearing, flange and axle shaft.
This is the longer of the two and measures 29 21/32”(see chart below)

For the length measurement I understand the correct way to measure is to hang a tape measure on the outside lip of the flange and measure at an angle down to the axle tip.
In this case it would be the left(or drivers side) and a 23 spline end at 29 21/32” length. See the attached chart.

I’ll dig it out and get pics it came out of my Dana that the pass side bearing was replaced poorly so I bought a pair of moser axles. Drivers side was fine and I believe is complete as I put green bearings in it

Sounds good, the drivers side is the longer of the two axles.
The flange on my axle is tweaked, I had it faced off so the wheel is running true but I can hear it in the bearing. Replacement has to be true!
I’m going with the stock bearings. So I would have to change out the green bearing.
Are the stock axles altered to install the green bearing? I’m not familiar with the green bearings, maybe you can give me some insight?

It has the stock bearings on it I put green ones on my new axles as far as I know it’s true I’ll get pics

The length should be 29 21/32” or just a tad over 29 5/8”. I know digital distorts things weirdly, I’ve had that happen when I have taken photos of measurements, just want to verify the length with you.

Was that measurement from the outside lip of the flange down to the tip of the axle?
 
Well... I wonder what the date code on the Dana is that came out of.
I’ve heard the ‘66 & ‘67 model year cars axles were 5/8” less flange to flange than the ‘68-‘69 1/2 model year cars with the 23 spline power lock axle assemblies.
The Dana/Spicer chart that I sent covers ‘68-up and has that axle shaft length at 29 21/32”
The measurement of your axle comes in at ~5/16” shorter than the measurement off the chart for ‘68.
So it appears to be an earlier than ‘68 model year axle shaft.
I know with the stock bearings you can’t set the axle end play if the gap is that wide.
It probably doesn’t matter using green bearings since they are non-adjustable.
Bear with me a few days while I verify this, and I will get back to you.

It should be right then, especially if the housing date code is also ‘68. Would be three numbers followed by an A, B or C above or next to the axle assembly part number.
Check those if you could and let me know what they are(see attached pics for location).
I’m going to pull my axle and measure it, that’s the only way to be 100% sure and it might take me several days to clear the time to do that.
If it’s good, we can do some business!

Honestly the rears under the car and painted so I’m not sanding it down it’s not worth it to me for a couple hundred bucks to repaint the rear on my back

Ok...I have some answers.
First though, I didn’t ask nor imply that you should sand your axle. For the most part these numbers on the housing are easily visible unless they were obliterated by aggressive sanding/sandblasting, grinding, or rust.
Why I wanted to know that information was to solve a mystery so to speak. But I did so another way.
As you say your gears are dated ‘68 so I will assume the housing date code is also ‘68 and it would add up that it is due to this:
‘66 & ‘67 model year B body car axles overall tracking width was 11/16” LESS than ‘68-‘69 1/2 model year cars. 58.5” vs 59.2”.
Therefore, each ‘66 & ‘67 axle shaft is ~5/16” LESS than a ‘68-‘69 1/2 axle shaft.
Repeating what I said earlier, you can’t set the original tapered bearing preload if the gap is too much-as in early axles in a later housing.
The bearings walk out of the races and cause excessive play resulting in bearing failure(sound familiar?).
With green bearings the axle gap wouldn’t matter because there is no adjustment on those non-tapered bearings.
I think it’s obvious somewhere along the line somebody slapped earlier axles in your later housing.
Maybe out of ignorance or intentionally knowing they were screwing somebody over. Nevertheless, someone down the line pays the price for it.
Part of the fun of this hobby to me is solving these mysteries and sharing that knowledge with others. All for the betterment of the hobby.
To wrap it up, that axle is from an earlier Dana and won’t work for me or anyone else that has a ‘68-‘69 1/2 model year Dana.

The flange on my axle was slightly tweaked, I had it faced off way back in ‘81 or ‘82 so the wheel is running true but I can hear it in the bearing.
I’m doing a light re-restoration on it and this is one of the corrections I want to make.
