Maybe the aftermarket wasn't as astute as the FBBO consortium about figuring out the usage.
 
There are some "plant specific" things that could explain why one plant may have used black and another red...

...but the red/black on 383 2 and 4 barrels only makes a lot of sense.

The scientific method project manager in me wants to:

Survey owners of 67 cars to see if anyone has a verified unmolested car with anything other than black on 2 barrel cars and red on 4 barrel cars, and document the plants they were from.

...and survey 66 owners to see if any are red. (my hunch is that the same usage may apply but since there are no 1966 engines that could have come 2 vs 4 BBL, there won't be any of the same displacement in different colors.......unless it was a plant thing in that year as well).
