Anybody enjoy going to the County Fair, or State Fair ? What do you like to see and do while there ?

We go every year if we can. My kids both used to show horses, and we go through every barn to see all the critters. The cow barn is always the busiest, and the livestock auction is usually the biggest draw there. I’m not big on rides, but I’ll go on the Ferris wheel if Nella wants to, she is basically just there for the jumbo pretzels and the horses!

We go to the South Florida Fair, which is in West Palm Beach, most years. The fair goes for 2 weeks in January which is a great time to be outside here. The local model railroading club has a permanent layout in one of the buildings that is manned during the fair. We always walk through and talk to them about whatever updates they have made. We also like sampling some of the fair food. The fairgrounds has permanent area called Yesteryear Village that is filled with old building saved from the area and a look at what life in S Fl was like around the turn of the century when the area was first being populated. The 4H kids bring in their livestock to show - we don't usually watch a lot of the shows, but do walk through the areas to see the horses, cows, poultry, rabbits, etc. The set up a "Mooternity" ward with pregnant cows and you can see calves being born if your timing is good.
Finally, the local farmers bring in fresh produce and sell it to support the local 4H. Some of the freshest produce around unless you have your own garden and it's priced far below the local grocery stores so we usually pick up some fresh peppers - bells, various hot peppers and poblanos when they have them so I can make chile rellenos - and bags of locally grown rice.

The Plant City Strawberry Festival is each February. This is the quintessential small town fair. The main reason I go is the get the strawberry shortcake sold as a fundraiser by the local nuns.

The only thing that makes county fairs worthwhile to me is fried dough with butter and powdered sugar on top.

I go for the demolition derby.
Not much else.
I do like to see all the animals as well.
But we do work on classic cars at the derby.
This is a Malibu "classic"

Strawberry festival also gets a LOT of musical acts and doesn't cost much to get in.

Some years they have 15 performers and of those half are people/groups you know.

Lots of carnival rides as well.

I used to go to the Montgomery county fair in Dayton OH.

Back when tractor pulls were real or only slightly modified farm tractors as well as stock and slightly modified 2 and 4 wheel drive trucks.

Saw the Hell Drivers in Valiants and Dusters there in the late 70's.

They also had a model contest display.

Rides, food and winning prizes were always the drivers for going to a fair/carnival as a kid.
But regretfully we found out too late that just this past Tuesday we could have seen Don Frelier's boy in the derby at the fair. And only minutes away from where we were that night. That sounds like it would have topped all other motivators for going to the fair to me.

We went all the time when I was a kid. I took my kids also, they loved it. I used to have a booth for the business back in the early nineties for a couple years. I realized it really was a waste. Still went for the experience and the kids always loved it. Did the demo derby in 2001, took 4th place, got a 10 buck check. I never cashed it, it was fun, I’ll say that. Just took too much time to get and prep the car, for how long it last. My kids take the grandkids, so it lives on.

Going to the county fair tonight. Try and go every year, I have a 6 year old daughter. My live in GF has 2 kids also 12 & 8. I like to go check out the farm animals and eat junk food. Got 3 ride bracelets for the kids was 155$ lol.

Love the county fair. It's mandatory I buy some fresh apple butter from a very local grower/producer, who
cooks up fresh batches right at the event.
I'm talking....

....that's good stuff!

Ours already happened June 29th to July 3rd
they should have extended it for the 4th of July on that Tuesday
& fireworks display were completely separate
down the hill in Sonora, Tuolumne Co. Fairgrounds

was more fun, many years ago, when they had a dirt track & demo-derby

I always check out the midway
you have to walk thru it 1st, see the Joe Dirt-bags/carney atmosphere

then the livestock exhibits, kids section 1st

then the rodeo is (or was) the main attraction for me now
didn't have it for a couple of years, Wuhan flu BS nonsense
our local people refused to mask up, thank goodness

sometimes when the kids come up
(they all have lives, and spouses or travel plans of their own now)
I'll go on rides, usually do more of the midway stuff
(my 86+ dad isn't much for rides or walks now, he does like the rodeos thou
I think he like the rodeo queen, cowgirls & barrel racers more
:poke: )
& I will check out the halls, do a lot more walking around, exhibits/contests too...

In May, Mothers Day Roundup PRCA Rodeo is really way better...

When I do go now,
Gotta get a corndog & onion rings, BEER or any number of fried foods
OR it isn't the Fair
it's not as fun without the youngsters, they've all grown up...
